What addition have you made to your home that's unique?
Comments (53)When we moved into our Indiana lake house in 1976, there was a huge iron bell on a post in the front yard. It was original to the house, which was built in 1930. We used it to call kids home from neighbors, in from the boat, and to signal approval to the decorated boats in the July 4th Flotilla. The first picture I took in that house was my DH lifting our 4-year old son up to ring the bell. When we decided to move to Tennessee to be near (next door, in fact) to our two daughters, I insisted we take down the bell and bring it along. It took 5 men several hours to get it down, but it's here, in storage, and will be outside the kids' entrance to our new home. Can't take pics now, but maybe someday! Incidentally, when we tore down the 1930 house in 2001 and rebuilt, we used the rough-sawn cedar from the outside of the old house to line the screened porch. It took about 15 coats of paint to get it sealed and smooth enough to be interior siding. I loved reusing it!...See MoreWhite dove turned out obvious YELLOW in my house :(
Comments (81)This "what color is my paint" thread turns up frequently, even when the finished paint is the same manufacturer as the sample used in selection. And more so when the paint manufacturers differ. There are several common causes: 1. No two paint mixtures are exactly the same, even from the same manufacturer and color. There are always small variations. Those who have tried small spot touch-up painting know what I am talking about. 2. And then there's the lighting that may be used to select a paint color versus the lighting used to illuminate the final painted area. Natural light varies each day, depending on the angle of the sun, the quantity of direct and indirect light in the painted space (or not) and reflections. Artificial light varies depending on the type and temperature of the lamps (bulbs) used. 3. A simple reason for finished paint to not closely match the sample: Most painted surfaces are vertical. Often paint samples are viewed, and decisions made, with the sample placed horizontally. The difference between the appearance of a vertical surface compared with a horizontal surface can be surprisingly great. Always view samples in the same plane and in the same light as the final painted surface. Combined, these lighting effects help explain why painted surfaces may appear different at different times of day, and why the appearance of painted surfaces in the daytime may appear to be different than the same surfaces during evening hours. It's a simple question with some less than simple ingredients....See MoreWanted to share my very unique home for sale!
Comments (23)I really enjoyed admiring your very charming home! I am curious about one thing, though. In my area of the northeast, basement footage is not counted, even when finished, but is also not taxed. In your area, are taxes accessed for basements? Good luck selling your home (edited to say, best wishes in selling your lovely home! My good luck comment sorta sounded disingenuos, LOL!) Comments (60)Thank you for posting this topic. My sympathies to you for having to deal with this situation. We similarly struggle with how to host friend and/or family gatherings and either politely limit to adults only or have some kind of guarantee that parents will at least attempt to watch their children. We have a new (to us) house with furniture we have worked hard to collect over the years - a mixture of antiques and quality furniture but not necessarily made for rowdy behavior. Our house is definitely not "child proof" and we don't have bins of toys for entertaining kids since we don't have children of our own. Recently we experienced a similar situation where an invitation for an adult party (food, drinks, adult conversation, etc) was ignored / misunderstood and we ended up with rowdy un-attended young children running amuck in our house. I do not have much experience with children and it is overwhelming to try to be a gracious hostess and also be expected to parent someone else's children. I am new to hosting larger get togethers and I already felt at my limits to host a big adult group. Adding the stress of unsupervised children made the evening very difficult to enjoy. I appreciate all of the wisdom people have shared about setting rules. It is refreshing to hear that I am not being unreasonable to expect that parents will watch their own children when visiting my home. Anytime I invite someone (adult or child) into my home, I expect accidents can happen (spilled food / drink, scratched leather, glasses broken, etc) but it seems completely unacceptable to have anyone of any age running wild in my home....See Morecyndiego
