Any summer bloomers for partial shade?
Comments (6)I agree that the lily types mentioned will do beautifully. Given your specifications, the only other plant I can think of is Belamcanda chinensis - "Blackberry Lily" - which will tolerate part shade (it's an orange late summer bloomer). It's not so much the partial shade, but rather the dry conditions that are the more limiting factor. I'm assuming also that you're only looking for perennials that are hardy in Zone 5. If tender summer bulbs are not out of the question for you, you'd have more plants to choose from. If you wish, I can give you some suggestions there. cranebill...See MoreBest Roses for Partial Shade??
Comments (16)Judith, silly me, I was getting ready to give you my list when it struck me that blooming is the criteria. Whoops! I have Parade, Cornelia, Mrs B R Cant, Francois Juranville and one Louis Philippe in mostly shade. They're all green and healthy, but I have nothing to compare their blooming to. Being young climbers, P (3rd year) and FJ (1st year) may just be showing their youth, but they're supposed to tolerate shade. My Cornelia is healthy (major accomplishment since other HMs are now gone due to this issue) but she hasn't bloomed a whole lot with maybe 2 hours of late afternoon sun after a year in the ground. Amazingly, MBRC did bloom even on her backside which is in dark shade. Unfortunately, the whole bush is now in shade. I'm sure she would bloom more in sun. Must trim some trees! Clotilde Soupert does real well in a lot of shade - don't know exactly how much sun she gets. Maybe 4 - 5 hours. Sherry...See MoreHeritage Austin Rose for partial shade?
Comments (7)The one in the full sun spot does get some blackspot, more in some years than others (like this year when we have gotten way more rain than usual). But it keeps most of the leaves and overall the bush looks good. I would recommend it for a no-spray garden in conditions like mine and since you spray maybe it wouldn't have any disease at all. In my garden there are only 2 roses so far that get NO blackspot. The rest get at least a little bit at certain times, but the full sun Heritage is one of my healthiest. More reason to love it....See MorePartial Shade Disease Resistant Compact Climbing Rose for Containers
Comments (5)I personally have no experience yet, but people on this forum have suggested using large containers. Also not sure where you are, but both very hot temperatures and cold temperatures could be an issue for container plants as the roots are more exposed. I am planning to start this year as I am running out of space in my yard. Having killed roses in planters previously, I plan to provide some sort of drip irrigation when I am away, and possibly move the containers in summer to protect them from our brutal sun. lets see how that goes. Eventually I would like to find a happy place where they get enough sun but not bake. Winter is not much of a concern here, although a couple of my austins did not come back up after the 2017 winter. not sure if it was the cold, or the combination of cold +wet. My jasmines also died back and just now recovering....See MoreAquaEyes 7a NJ
