Coleus Seedlings, some confusion
Comments (30)Cultural conditions have a significant impact on growth rate. New seedlings need a favorable ratio of water to air in the soil, and the right light and temperature to realize their genetic potential. A common problem is a soil that holds too much water or is kept too wet. Seedlings like a damp, never wet or soggy soil with plenty of air in the medium to ensure good root health. A plants health starts with the roots, so w/o a healthy root system, a healthy plant isn't possible. Start fertilizing when the first true leaves are conspicuous. Comments (8)Radiant throughout a 3500 sq. ft. house will be very expensive. It will also require a boiler which will mean you will need to fuel it with propane. An electric boiler is an alternative but not very practical in my opinion. Another option would be to install baseboard heating. Not as expensive as radiant, but more expensive than for hot air. This would also require a boiler. I am surprised that you are not planning to add air conditioning. I assume the summers are mild, but how is the humidity level? Would you be interested in a system which would keep the relative humidity in the 40's during the summer? You can get that with a forced hot air system with a heat pump. I think you have attractive electric rates. A properly designed forced air system would be both economical and comfortable in all seasons....See MoreTotal Confusion Over Patio Slab

Comments (12)The 17 just tells you the percentage by weight in the mix. You have to look at the relationship between the three numbers. If we round the N down to 15 to make the math easier you end up with a reduced ratio of 3-1-6. A fertilizer solution with 100ppm N made out of a fertilizer with a ratio of 3-1-6 is exactly the same as a fertilizer solution with 100 ppm N made out of a fertilizer with a ratio of 15-5-30. The only difference is that you would have to add five times the amount of dry 3-1-6 to reach that 100ppm N concentration. Now that 7-9-5 has more nitrogen than potassium when there should be twice as much potassium as nitrogen. 7-9-5 is a high phosphorus/high nitrogen fertilizer it is just not in a very concentrated form. Commercial growers actually make two different fertilizer solutions because they alter the nitrogen ratio at different growing phases but the PK and micronutrients t ratios stay the same. So they have one stock solution that is like 4-5-30 and then a second with calcium nitrate to adjust just the N....See MoreCee Smith
