Paddle Plant (Kalanchoe thrysiflora)
Comments (22)Hello there to the Cactus Board We don't post on this forum, but saw Kim's post and repost. Our son bought this plant with the same care instructions at the Home Depot. We also scratched our heads reading the care instructions. What the grower means is if there is any stem between the new top growth that you clipped off and the large leaves, cut the stem back to the large top leaves. IOW, don't leave a "stick" at the top of the specimen. That said, we wouldn't prune it either. It's young. Don't know your growing conditions. Once a week may be frequent watering depending on conditions. You may want to cut back if the plant isn't properly light and warm. Another possibility: we find some Home Depot plants are not acclimated down to home environment conditions. They tend to back slide until they can adjust to your conditions. Stand your ground with good care and let the plant get ugly for awhile. You may be doing everything right. The bottom leaves will probably dry up and fall off. New growths will appear just above the old leaf sites. Then you know you are doing right by your new purchases. Hope that helps! CV I have 2 paddle plants indoors. I water them once a week, draining all the water out. I fertilize once a month. My poor plants are drooping and pitiful looking and I can't figure out why! They came with a little instruction card stuck in the soil and I do not understand one of the instructions.- "Continuing care-Remove two top leaves and cut stem back to top of remaining leaves to encourage new growth at base and to maintain shape." Why would I cut the top leaves? That's new growth! And how do you cut the stem back?? I'm confused and my poor plants are suffering! TIA- Kim...See MoreMy, now, not so modest bunch! (Picture heavy)
Comments (11)Sun damage will happen like that, yes. :/ It's a bummer. I envy those cristatas! The Haworthia cymbiformis 'variegata' is absolutely gorgeous. I have debated about ordering that very plant off ebay, but I have ebay seller fear and haven't; that and shipping costs just kill me. But finding it locally probably isn't in the cards, so I may break down and do it pre-Christmas. The Haworthia limifolia var. ubomboensis, which I too have, is really nice as well. My Haworthia are the only succulents I have in the house, and they're nice company at the window in light shade. Haworthia are generally not full-sun-lovers and are pleased in shade/light shade. Graptopetalum paraguayense is an awesome plant. :) And the Dudleya candida is gorgeous. Doing individual searches of each plant will result in a lot of great advice. Your collection's great!...See MoreWhat's your dream/favorite vacation?
Comments (86)Wow mtn, those sound like amazing trips. I truly believe the planning part of the trip is almost as pleasureable as the trip itself. But I love to plan and research, sounds like you do too. I read recently that spending money on travel can make good economic sense in terms of value for money spent. First you research, plan and dream of the trip, then you do it, then you continue to reap benefits through memories, photos and the knowledge (and possible friendships) you gain. I'm convinced! :) Regarding MP in December, the issue is rain. Given your time constraints I'm guessing you're not hiking in on the Inca trail? It could be miserable hiking (unless you enjoy hiking in the rain, many people do. I'm a wimp though). If you're not hiking try to leave yourself a couple of days open to make the ascent by train/bus from Cusco. That way you should have enough flexibility to get up there in a rain free window. Cusco is a wonderful place to spend a couple of days. I didn't make it to Lake Titicaca, but I've heard it is definitely worth the trip. I enjoyed the Nazca lines ( we flew over them) in Peru, and the pyramids near Trujillo. I didn't make it to the Peruvian amazon, wish I did. And I just loved th Pisco Sour I had in Pisco! I had planned a nearly year long trip for 2016, my kids will be in grades 3 and 6 then. I wanted to circle the Pacific, down through Peru and Chile, to Easter Island, then on to NZ, Australa, up through Asia to Vladivostok then back to Vancouver. It would be an incredible learning experience for them, but I'm starting to pull back a bit. First it is likely too ambitious with relatively young kids, ie exhausting. Second, my kids go to school in French and a year away from French may be too much. So I may just take the easy path and spend the better part of the year based in France, with frequent excursions around Europe. Fun planning regardless. I've lived in St. Lucia, Austria (Vienna), Russia (Moscow & St. Petersburg), the UK (outside London) along with some shorter working stints in Bosnia and Romania. My parents spent a decade in Costa Rica, so I spent a fair bit of time there too, and in Panama. Most of my young adulthood was spent in Europe, or planning to get to Europe, so my travel experience in largely Euro based. I need to get out more! :)...See MoreIn the beginning . . .
Comments (10)I've been glacially slow in planting the island, but I have made some progress. Yes, there are some bare spots. I have resisted filling them in so I can walk up to pull weeds. Here we are today! The back side - all crotons are gone now. East side - I think I have planted some things too closely together! West end - looks more sparse. There are some babies planted there. It has more or a vertical drop. Maybe something that trails? That's my bloomin' Agave at the top. And Charlie decided we needed some lights. I always defer to him on this. When he describes his lighting ideas to me it always sounds bad (to me!), but it always looks good when he is done. Here's a picture of the lights. Thanks for taking a look!...See MoreRelated Professionals
