Help! My house wears a hat!

Please help! My home is so nice inside but has zero curb appeal and the low orange roof w/ wide fascia resembles a hat! I'm thinking of removing the railing on the porch and creating a raised bed in front to minimize height between ground and porch, hopefully making the entry more open. But what color for the roof's fascia board-- I don't think it can be removed and the white only highlights it! Trim/downspouts/wooden windows? Front door (I'm thinking mustard yellow? Landscaping? Last time you guys helped me sell my house FSBO in just 2 weeks with your tips! Thank you in advance!

5 years agoI suggest adding some gorgeous landscaping. That will help the front of your house and add curb appeal. You can always consult someone at a garden center or hire a professional landscaper. I suggest big, extended flower beds and getting rid of those bushes. Here are a couple of ideas:

Help! How Many of You Wear Aprons...
Comments (81)I wear an apron when I think of it..generally too late! I have several bib-type aprons I bought from a restaurant supply store many years ago (knee length and yes, the bib isn't wide enough) and though they are looking ratty, they still protect me from spills and splashes and give me a place to wipe my hands. I've also used them for approximate patterns to make gifts for friends. When painting, I have a pair of painter's coveralls which belonged to my beloved uncle who was about my size. They have paint on them from at least five decades (even wore them as a hallowe'en costume once) and they will be used until they simply rot away. Gardening is just the oldest, shabbiest jeans I can find because I crawl around in the dirt. Shirt must have long sleeves, though. Often an old men's shirt from SV de P or Goodwill, open, over a tank top. Lots of air circulation, cool enough, and limits sun exposure. I have a couple of aprons my grandmother made for me for my first marriage. Never wore either of them. They are half-aprons, hand embroidered. Comments (25)I remember the last time this came up. The drama from some on either side of the issue. The ones who have special feet that need shoes on, etc. For me, i take my shoes off most of the time. I'm more comfortable that way, plus there's not the mess in inclement weather. I grew up not taking them off, short of boots, but as I've matured this habit has changed. I think the studying of the Japanese culture and traditions has made me change to a shoes off on entry. For a while, and still occasionally, I'll take off dirty/wet shoes and put on some boat shoes as my semi-indoor shoes, although I'll still wear them out to get mail or to step out for a breath of air or something as long as they're not getting dirty or wet. Plus with the medical issues the latter years, shoes aren't as wanted. When I go someplace I normally take them off especially in the winter but even in the summer as a courtesy to people who take pride in their homes and don't want dirty footprints on everything. I can't understand people who think they can slop through snow, slush, salt, mud and whatever else and then walk on peoples' carpets, wood steps and floors and be offended when people ask them to remove the slop. Maybe people should be washing their feet before entering others' homes. My sister's ex-boyfriend was one who refused to remove his shoes and he insisted on wearing waffle stompers on top of it. He was given the option, and not just at my place but others too, that he can remove his shoes and come in or keep his shoes on and stand in the genkan until he is slushless. Comments (28)How about this? Get some totes (or boxes). Put the clothes in these totes. Seal them. Date them, say, 60 days, 90 days, 120 days hence, etc. Agree that if he hasn't unsealed a tote by the date, you can donate the contents. I was going to suggest the same thing. I've done it for myself -- and I wasn't sorry. Maybe you can't get rid of these excess clothes, but you can pack them away neatly. Personally, about a year ago I went through my closet and got rid of about 60% of my clothes -- and I am thrilled with the result. I can't even remember specific garments I "lost", but I love that everything in my closet fits, everything is a complete outfit, and everything fits into the closet without stuffing. When I retire (in another year), I can't wait to ditch the khaki pants and unflattering polo shirts that I am occasionally required to wear to school -- I've come to resent "junk" in my closet. An unexpected benefit: I have become very discriminating about what I buy (not that this has been a big shopping year anyway). I find myself asking, "Does this deserve a space in my life?" and "Would I really wear this often enough to justify spending on it?" Honestly, the only thing I've really bought in the last year is a pair of red dress shoes -- and I really need another pair of jeans. This is maybe easier for me, given that I'm so close to retirement, because I've also vowed not to buy anything I can't imagine wearing in my retirement years. My DH is a slob. He was a slob when I married him (46 years ago) and he is still a slob. He will never change. His mother was a slob too. I have had to adjust to his ways as I’m a neatnick and OCD too. Pick your battles. Do you want to die on this hill? I could say the same; well, except that I never knew his mother -- she died when he was a teenager. When I want to kill him because of his slovenly ways, I force myself to think about all the things he does well: he's a good provider, a wonderful father, he always lets me drive the new car, he takes my car out every Sunday and fills it with gas, he supports me in my career, he and I share so many hobbies -- so many things. I can get angry about his slovenly ways, start a fight, and end up doing the cleaning myself anyway -- or I can do it myself and remember that he contributes in other ways. Tupelo: If your boyfriend is unwilling to change, then you must ask yourself if this is the future you want for yourself and your future children: a significant other who doesn't care about how you want to live, or perhaps is chronically overwhelmed by life or is simply lazy? Not taking care of one's intimate belongings for an extended period of time is a sign of issues that will impact your future and not in a good way, these are bad habits that interfere with the development of the individual and also a couple. Comments (40)I don’t particularly like wearing a hat, but when i started running I started wearing a lightweight hat or visor. When we travel in the Miata (convertible) I have a wider brim hat with a drawstring. My head is small too, so I have to find something adjustable, sized, or with an elastic band. Hat head is a real thing. I always wear good sunglasses. I have a narrow nose bridge and find that it helps to shop around for a pair that fits well. I love a particular model of Maui Jim’s and have a couple of pair. I can send them off for repairs or new lens, sometimes it’s been free, so I feel like I’ve more than gotten my money’s worth and they don’t slide around....See More

5 years agoI agree with removing the shutters on the large window, along with the grids on the two small windows. I would also look at having the roof power washed and consider a darker color for the shutters on the small windows. Perhaps something like SW Uber Umber.

5 years agoWhat do you guys think of cedar shutters? I thought to maybe add cedar planters to go along with the cedar shutters...And maybe a yellow door-- mustard or canary?
