Just updated my powder room - pics
Comments (6)Thanks for the compliments! flyleft, The base paint is (Home Depot brand) Behr Interior Satin Enamel; color is "Fall Mood" (PWL-87). It's painted on with a roller (cut in at ceiling and corners with a brush). The next day I put on the glaze coat. I had them mix the top paint to a color that was the same as the base, but 25% lighter. The paint lady recommended 50% or 75% lighter, but I wanted a really subtle effect for the powder room. Anyway, the top paint is mixed 1 part paint, with 4 parts glaze. The glaze is Behr Faux Glaze (No, 748, whatever that means). So I mixed 1 pint of top paint with 1/2 gallon of Glaze (and still had lots left over), then applied the mixture with a rag. You just get the rag wet, wring it a little and then begin pressing it, all bunched up, onto the wall. You can do harder or softer for different effects, and you can do more sparsely or more completely for different effects. I did fairly hard (since it was so light) and pretty completely. Here's an upclose picture of it:...See MoreUpdating a dated powder room---need advise
Comments (3)I love your leopard print idea; I think you should fly with it. At the end of the day, it's a bunch of neutral colors (that tie in nicely with the yellow you're stuck with), so use it as your starting point. If it were me, I'd paint the vanity a very dark espresso brown (I think going cream or ivory might be too much contrast). I'd go a bit lighter but still dramatic -- say a milk chocolate -- on the walls. Then I'd pick a flooring out of that same palette; not knowing your budget, I don't know what material would work, but anything from hardwood to cork tiles, to ceramic or porcelain tile, to vinyl would be fine, as long as the color ties together with the others. For accessories, pick some jungle-inspired greens, like palm tree prints and embroidered hand towels. Also, an amber glass soap dish or dispenser, and/or amber glass shades on the lights, would look great. Makes me want attach my powder room now......See MoreDone! Comments (15)Thanks! I love how bright and crisp the board and batten looks, and it definitely gives you a lot of bang for your buck. Pipdog, please post pictures of your board and batten in your entry foyer. I'd love to see it. I got the rug on Overstock. It's an indoor/outdoor rug and works great in that space bc it's really low maintenance and a nice size. The one thing that I messed up on with the rug is that it's actually slightly too big for that space. Well, it fits exactly, but for the air vent, which I forgot to account for. I don't know why our builder made some air vents flat and flush to the ground and others like the one in the powder room where they stick up out of the floor. Anyway, if you can see in the bottom left hand corner, the rug curls up slightly against the air vent. I've been trying to come up with a solution for this, including binding the rug to make it a tad smaller. Oh well. Funny you should mention Jonathan Adler. I love his design style, his happy chic aesthetic, and so many of his products....See MoreLaundry room/ powder room update from 1951 knotty pine
Comments (25)So much great advice (and no judgement - thank you!) — I wanted to update, we’ve confirmed it’s only shellac! Thankfully, and we’ll be working on removing as much as possible tomorrow, with heat off and windows open. Pics below, including my husband cleaning his mess lol. Great tips on the floor - you’re points are right on, and given the work the walls will be I’d like an easier alternative for the floors for sure. The left window is actually a door that a previous owner caulked shut, but we’re planning to open and make functional again. Otherwise there isn’t much room for anything, but it would be ideal to move the sink elsewhere to have more wiggle room in the “bathroom”. We did take a quick look today at more narrow utility sink/ vanity combos, and while not perfect should be an improvement. At this point it feels that is still quite far in the future, but hopeful the shellac removal is quicker than I anticipate. Once again THANK YOU, I have been so delighted to find such a knowledgeable (and patient) community!!!...See Moreckidner
