Dillema chevron vs herringbone

I m redecorating my house and want to put wood effect tiles on the floor .

I got a few questions because i ve been reading contradicting articles on the net .

what is the best tiles size to make the room bigger? Should i go chevron or herringbone? Was thinking of doing the hallway and living room, Which direction should i follow. I want to use the same wood tile in the kitchen but different layout, also i m using as main entrance the garden door

So it sounds like you want to use a wood-look porcelain tile as your flooring choice. And that you want the tile to help make the space look bigger which is why you are choosing a form of herring bone installation. You are trying to decide between a herring bone or a chevron pattern herring bone where the tiles meet at a 45 deg angle (cut at the top and bottom of each tile) like a mitered corner.

OK...now that we've go that straight, here's a few things you will want to consider. To achieve a herring bone (no cuts to the tiles...they remain intact) you MUST use a tile that is a perfect multiple of itself. That is to say, the LONG edge is TWICE or Three times as long as the short edge. So a 12" x 24" tile will work. A 6" x 18" will work as well (these are rare but are out there). An 8" x 36" will NOT work.

That means your purchase/product choice will be limited by the pattern you wish to use. With wood-look tiles this normally isn't an issue....but it is still something you MUST consider.

The second thing you will need to know about "chevron" pattern is: it works for wood but it is HORRIBLE to work with wood-look tiles. Normally these tiles come in RECTANGLE shapes. It is *possible you might find a tile that is specifically designed in the shape you need it to be to make the chevron work. This would require INCREDIBLE LUCK and a high price tag (special shapes have special pricing). And then you would be stuck using the same pattern for the entire floor - every room would have to be a chevron pattern. There would be no way to change that with this particular shape of tile. And cutting them to shape would be a nightmare! The amount of waste you would have due to chipped tiles would almost double your purchase.

Thirdly the cost to install herring bone (I'm just going to assume this is how you will work because the chevron is very hard to get to work in tiles) is pretty high. And the waste level for herring bone is another 10% - 15% more than a traditional/straight install.

It sounds like only some of your space will get the herring bone while the rest will get a straight install. That's a good way to maximize the appearance of the tiles while still keeping costs/waste at a moderate amount.

As for direction....I would let that wait until you find the tile that will work in a herring bone. Then take it from there.

Horus was a nice match to my BA if I recall. I do love the pattern in the first pic. If you can do that in one color (not a fan of the border though) I think that it will be the shape that makes it special. It will have the same effect as the white arabesques that I try to describe--it's the shape of the tile that makes it special not the color. So perhaps that tile in a light gray or even a white. Only you can really determine the right color. The lighting in photos is not the lighting in real life and what you see with your eye while in the actual kitchen. I'm sure whatever you end up choosing will look fab, you are getting really close to making a decision.

They will absolutely get the sample board down for you. Call them, ask them, go pick it up and bring it into your space before making any other decisions. Let me take a stab at your other questions: chiseled vs straight edge - straight. Chiseled gives a more rustic look arabesque - tends to be in fancier, more formal spaces, but there's no reason it can't work in your kitchen range inset - usually a little smaller than the range, not bigger. Yes you could use herringbone here 2" x 6" tile will elongate the space. It will be very nice in a 1/3 offset pattern for the field. Let us know how the color looks to you.

You can definitely do better on that Kitchen quote with Ikea cabinets and butcher block countertops. Ikea has two real wood doors that would look nice in an old house: Torhamn and Lerhyttan. They also have a veneer door, Ekestad, that looks MCM-ish. You'd probably be looking at $4000 for Torhamn /Lerhyttan cabinets and $1000 for the butcher block. You might also want to look at Barker Cabinets, a line of custom made, ready to assemble wood cabinets for reasonable prices ( that's what I'm planning on using for my own kitchen). You can look up "Half Classic Six" blog for an example of a nice kitchen done with Barker. Barker would probably be $6000-$8000 depending on which door style and how many drawers vs. doors. I think you take a box of each and lay them out next to yours with your lighting etc so you have a true visual of how they will blend or contrast and to ensure the tones coordinate well. I would get up to 4 options at 1st to work with starting with the closest match to the furthest contrast that you like. Once you have them played out in the patter next to your floors and in your light and the scale of the space it will make a big difference. You will be able time step back and see if from afar, in different times of day etc. Some will stand out right away as the wrong choice, others will take a news days and fighting to decide and narrow it down. Just make sure you can take them back and any time limits for refunds. Try one out at a time. Hope that helps. I also take a picture of things when I first do them and sometimes it helps me pick out changes needed right away. Maybe that is just me but for some reason it is a huge help lol.

I'm just being curious but is this in the UK? My son is looking to buy a flat in London (Brixton) and the ones he's looking at look so much like this.
