Should I paint these cabinets? If so, what color?
We just purchased a preexisting new build, the house has a traditional/transitional feel. As the photos show, the floors are dark and the cabinets are also dark, so I'm thinking of having the cabinets painted. Sad since they're new but I like light bright. Style wise, I love how Leanne Ford on HGTV always paints walls white and I'm considering that. The counters are a neutral quartz, back splash is white subway, the walls are all light tan and the kitchen is open concept to the great room.
Here are the options that I've come up with, does one sound better to achieve a bright airy feel and not be dated in 5 years? Maybe someone has a different suggestion that I haven't thought of?
1. All white cabinets with white or very light grey/greige walls
2. Light grey cabinets with white walls
3. All white cabinets with a warm medium grey on the island with white or very light greige walls
4. All white cabinets with a bright blue island (medium tone leaning more blue green/teal) and white walls.
I'm also attaching a pendant light that I'm liking a lot for the kitchen. Maybe the tan walls would seem brighter with painted cabinets and the pendant light would tie it all together?

Comments (6)I think a grey blue or a pale green shown by the above poster would look great. If you pick grey blue make sure it's not too baby blue, but has good grey undertones and be ready (for either color) to try out big swaths of multiple colors. We have red oak floors and finding grey paint that doesn't reflect purple has been a nightmare. Our kitchen is a light cream (I call it lemon chiffon cake) and we ended up with a blue grey backsplash similar to that shown. It's not installed yet but I found there were very few colors that worked in our kitchen. It was more like the color chose us rather than vice versa. You might consider a two tone kitchen with blue grey bottom cabinets and a creamy white/cream uppers. Comments (14)If you had more appropriately sized shutters they would look better. They are too narrow. White ones. Or deep brown. They need to contrast with the brick. Limb up that tree. It’s a nice tree but it’s hanging too low. (Actually, limb up BOTH trees.) Remove the bushes in front of the sidewalk (to the right of the door) and replace with a really low groundcover. The bushes on the other side of the door look great. I can’t tell - is that a ramp? Are railings required near the door? And do you have room for a BIG pot of flowers by the door? Comments (6)the first picture is the first floor bathroom, the second and third picture is the guest bathroom. We picked this quartz for the guest bathroom, which worked out great. Due to the amount of quartz we had to order, we decided to put the extra in the first floor bath, which doesn't look so great. Comments (20)Like the pergola over the garage door idea. If built to be sturdy enough to walk on it, then it could serve as a fire escape route should the need ever arise -- certainly hope it never does. You might also consider painting your step rails and side supports the same color as your siding unless you're planning to have a wood finish door and/or a rustic porch and post addition over the entry at a later date, in which case you'd want those additions to have the same wood finish. 5 years agoWe repainted a house we recently purchased BM Classic Gray, and it updated the house so much. It’s basically an off-white with a tad bit of gray in it. Still fresh but warm. It would look nice with your cabinets/counter top.

Think of your cabinets, floors, and walls as a canvas onto which your selections of lighting, art, and furnishings will create the scene. Here are some barstools that could add color and elegance to the island so you don't have to paint it.

5 years agoThank you for the suggestions! My design style leans more modern/minimal vs. traditional. Here's a counter stool that I like (white of course! :) ).
Thinking with the white subway tiles and white walls it could work together.... :)
