Which display area is best for phals?
Comments (10)Hey, Sheila. Five to 10 feet away from a window is too far away. As the sun gets higher in the sky, the sun will start reaching less far into the room. Here's the rule: *Light falls off by one half for every foot away from the source*. Here's how it works: Take the window pane as the source of light. Assume it's 5,000 FC (sun directly overhead on the longest day in June is app 10,000 FC) So, 5000 FC as your windowpane. *One* foot away it is 2500 FC, *Two* feet away it is 1250 FC. At five feet it is about 150 FC. Even that would be only for a little while each day. So 5-10 feet away is almost no light. They need to be much closer to the window. Start with the 5 feet away, that should be safe. Make sure the leaves are cool to barely warm with the sun striking them. Then start moving 6" closer to the window at a time. Leave them there for a couple of days, feeling the leaves. Every couple of days, move 6" closer, til they're the foot or so from the window. At any time when the leaves feel warm where the sun hits them, move them back 6" or so, or run a fan across the leaves. The fan works wonders to cool the leaves while they are acclimating, or if the sun is too hot for only a half hour or hour. Take a week to two weeks to get it into its final position *in* the window. If you work, and can't check the leaves while the sun is on them, do the plant moving on weekends, and take longer. This time of year the sun is working with you, getting a little stronger every day, but very gradually. You will be amazed at how phals thrive and bloom when they get ample light. My blooming phals winter *in* a south window, no more than a foot from the glass. Most of them put out new leaves while blooming. Around April, I start a fan running across the leaves a couple of hours a day. Good luck....See MoreHow do I make best use of the deepest linen closet ever?
Comments (6)ShelvesThatSlide.com might be able to help you make shelves taht will be really deep, since they make custom sizes. You'd have to build a frame to attach the slides to. Shove the Elfa unit all the way to the back, thereby moving that 1 foot of space to the front, just inside the door. And call it a "step-in closet." Then attach shelves to the back of the door to jut into the air space. (put a lip on the front edge, so stuff won't fall out of the front. (8 inches deep or so; whatever works, and you can vary them if you like) Hang brooms, ironing board w/ iron, a plastic-bag organizer, the cordless vacuum cleaner, and maybe a pantry-door organizer--whatever--on the walls just inside the door. Maybe even set the vacuum in front of the Elfa shelves....See Morehow to display close to 100 heirloom photos...? ideas??
Comments (21)This is quite timely for me as I also recently inherited many boxes of photos, we had two professional photographers in two different branches of the family back in the early 1900’s. So photos galore from them as well as other photos both earlier and later in time. Plan to archive the photos. Looking to find a way to display a number of the photos without them taking over my house and decor. Great suggestions here. I also, wanted to share my experience on exactly how delicate these photos can be. I left a photo out of it’s box for less than a day, in that short time the sun and heat faded the photo significantly and it went from flat to curled edges. The photo was on a table in a sunny room, although not directly in the sun. Lesson learned, thankfully we have other similiar photos....See MoreWall plate displays
Comments (33)Holly Stockley: Wow, I had no idea! And I love those blue transfareware plates; glad you shared - making me want to go that route since I already have some pieces (maybe add some red into the mix to predict it from being too predictable... hmmmm). Zalco/bring back Sophie!: Well, I was primarily looking for encouragement... so thanks! :) BeverlyFLADeziner: Love the photos and love the idea of layering the plates. Wonder how that's done... will have to look into it. Also agree with you about the table, this was brought in last minute and we never meant to keep it longterm. I do love the rug there, though. Would you do away with it altogether? Or replace it with a round/oval rug? Thanks! jhmarie: Your kitchen is lovely! So warm and inviting, and has that timeless feel I always love. Thanks for sharing! :) hollybar: I agree, I think I may like them with more movement as in those photos... I even like that layered effect. Will try to figure out how that's done and may just do it that way, very cool looking! :)...See MoreLouise McCarthy
