Anyone growing Sadie Ray or Little Lamb?
Comments (5)I've got Little Lamb and love it. The link below shows how it looked the first year I planted it. And if you go farther in the album, you'll see how it matures and becomes a delightful show. I keep it small by pruning. I think this is year 3 and it's leaping. Wants to grow and grow. I adore the white blooms drooping to the ground so that it really does look like little lambs resting in my garden, but that's really not its habit. It's grown quite a bit wider since I've planted so that this year that singe plant is at least 5 feet, if not 6 feet wide. I think you'll like this one. Comments (3)Thanks Jerrytx, Yes I figured I'd have to wait until fall to plant it. Sounds like it's also a good covercrop to turn into your bed after it is finished for the season. There are apparently several varieties and one with a larger leaf is supposed to be better for warm weather, although the smaller leaf is reported to be the tastiest. (see the link below). I live in the central Texas area in a zone that seems to be somewhere between 8-9. Mache does sound like it would be really easy to grow, so I guess it's more about the timing of sowing seed, etc. for this region. I still have lettuce in my garden this spring and it's doing great due to cooler and rainier weather I guess. I really prefer winter veggies...all those delicious greens!...and am looking forward to planting one whole area of just lettuce. gardener972, thanks for the link. Comments (5)I made this one a few years ago for my Passover crowd (in Lori316's stoneware that she sent me in a swap, ah, memories). DS #2 demanded it again! I used lamb shanks instead of chops. Lamb Chops with Dried Cherries and Port Bon Appétit : April 2008 Bon Appétit Test Kitchen Yield: Makes 2 servings 2 teaspoons olive oil 4 4-to 5-ounce loin lamb chops 1/3 cup chopped shallots 3/4 cup ruby Port 1/2 cup low-salt chicken broth 1/2 cup dried tart cherries 3 tablespoons cherry jam 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom Chopped fresh mint or parsley Heat oil in heavy medium nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Sprinkle lamb with salt and pepper. Add lamb to skillet; cook to desired doneness, turning often, about 10 minutes for medium-rare. Transfer lamb to plate. Pour off drippings from skillet. Add shallots to same skillet; sauté 1 minute. Add Port, broth, cherries, jam, vinegar, and cardamom; boil until cherries plump and liquid is syrupy, about 6 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Spoon sauce over lamb. Sprinkle with mint. Here is a link that might be useful: Epicurious recipe...See Morehard to Believe but -- Too Many Lamb Shanks!
Comments (5)I think they were simply roasted. Actually, probably braised. They were served in a large steam table tray with some light -- sauce isn't quite light enough -- seems like pan juices with a little cream stirred in. They are very, very tender -- we could subdue them with plastic forks. (Which is good, because we don't have enough real forks for staff, let alone all the volunteers!) I also have a tub of bacon, but I have a pretty good idea of what to do with that. Two purloined pieces at a time.......See More- 8 years agolast modified: 8 years ago
