I want to cover about half of my small backyard with either a patio or ground-level decking for entertaining and enjoying the outdoors. As I've been researching contractors/designers it seems that most landscape designers show their patio only work, and the carpenters who are decking only.

All things being equal, is deck vs patio a simple question, and if not how do you get an unbiased suggestion?
