A different Tub vs Shower question
Comments (9)I can say, from the young family perspective (so again, what will your house be marketed towards, and when?)-- A large master shower that 2 people can use simulataneously with a normal hall bath with tub would be the preference... Rarely does a mom get a chance for a soak anyway. And, if your house is a starter home, an independent "soaking" tub wouldn't be something someone is likely to pay extra for. If you aren't going to do any bells/whistles on the tub in the master, you aren't adding anything, imo. Keep the tub in the hall bath. Choose something like a white Kohler villager that is inexpensive but looks good and is cast iron and it will be your better bet, for a young family. As for using a larger shower. Best to find a hotel somewhere (probably a nice one) with walk-in showers of the size you are considering to try it out. For our family, we are currently undergoing a remodel--we'll have a modest master bath with 2 sinks, toilet and 3x5 (or 33"x60") shower only....See MoreTub/shower combo or tub and shower stall
Comments (15)I know I probably went overboard, but I have been searching Houzz for shower/tub combos for myself if I decide to go in that direction. Most of these pictures have Master Bath titles - they tend to be small houses or apartments in large cities where space is an issue. They all have a generous sized tub. A few have extra shower bling and even a separate tub filler. All of them have material choices and the level of tile work that you see in a master bathroom. I'm sure that if I searched Houzz I could find just as many, or even more, remodels of small master baths where they have just built a walk in shower. I think the decision to do a shower/tub may be a personal choice because they want a soaking tub - since they are titled Master I'm assuming the bath is not the only bath in the house and they could easily just go with a shower. Comments (0)We are remodeling after a recent housefire and our 19 year old tub/shower unit has been taken out. I believe it was fiberglass and was all one piece. What they want to put back in is a two or three piece unit. He said the sides fit together but he could seal it if we want him to. This seems like a step down in quality to me and our insurance should pay for something of similar quality. I'm afraid it will get moisture behind it if we don't seal it and that the sealant would be hard to keep clean if they do it that way. I'm also wondering how long it would stay sealed. Will the sides be attached to the wall and will they stay where they're supposed to? I'd rather have a one piece unit in there but maybe that's not possible. Am I getting cheated? What would be equal value to my cheap but non-leaking fiberglass tub/shower unit?...See MoreRemoving Tub/Shower Combo Question
Comments (7)Agree with Millworkman, Deluxe. The advise to the OP is good. Plugging your business is a no no on the forums. To the OP: We just replaced a 16 year old steel tub with a new cast iron one when we remodeled a bathroom. We wanted to leave the existing 20x20 floor tile that was only 6 years old. Being a standard tub, the new tub fit in perfectly without damaging the floor tile. It can be done! Just make sure your demo guys know that you are keeping the floor tile so they are more careful in getting the tub out. In the event the floor tile was damaged or tub was of a different width, we did have a few pieces of the floor tile we could have filled in with but chose, if it came to that, to cut the existing tile back from the new tub a width we thought pleasing and put in a pebble border in front of the tub that tied in with the new 4 x 8 brick laid travertine we were using on the tub walls....See Morecpartist
