I think there’d be too many patterns competing for attention. If your heart is set on lantern tile there are some very beautiful ones that have a smooth surface and would look quite nice in your kitchen. Using a grout colour matched to the colour of the tile would further minimize the busy-ness that a lantern tile can create.

Listen to your architect.

Also, the kitchen is small and does not look to have the typical 18" high space between counter and upper cabinets. While the herringbone is beautiful, I think you needs some height so you can truly appreciate the pattern. You'll probably want to go simpler in a warmer white tile. I'd be inclined to select something more vertical in design to draw the eye upwards.

While we wait....You will not want white. You will want to choose a cream/ beige that will transition from the white of the cabinets to the browns in the granite. I did this will my Giallo.
