GWers, please help me choose a sink for powder room
Comments (19)Yes, that's what the bracket from the UglyBoysRoom sink looks like - they have a pair of small flanges that fit into slots on the sink and support it - the 1939 Standard Shelfback I have is surprisingly different - no slots in the back, but there are a couple of slots on the bottom of the sink a few inches in. The bracket mounted to the wall, and locks in under the sink more like a cleat. It also has holes for Chrome front legs that help support the weight. It's all ceramic and super heavy even at only 22" wide (there's a larger version of this sink too). I'll be sure to install heavy blocking to support it. Luckily, it looks like I can get a bracket that will work (but not made for the exact sink) - I'll still probably hit the salvage shops and see if I can turn one up locally for just a few bucks before I pony up retail from a retro shop. Always ;-) Hunzi...See MoreHelp choosing paint color for small bathrooms!
Comments (6)Don't be afraid to go dark in small places. Dark works amazingly well in small places-imagine huge room that you use all the time painted dark..not for the weak nerves. While in smaller places, especially ones where you spend just so and so amount of time, dark is enveloping, cozy and calming actually-or elegant and striking, depending on the direction you take. Don't be afraid of contrast with white fixtures. Dark loves some white, and light touches, shiny surfaces like in your mirrors or lighting fixtures, metal (fixtures yet again, and picture frames for example)..it can become easily one of your favorite places in the house if you treat it like a little room. Go with one of the colors in your tile(it already has many, so I'd keep to one of them)...if your ceiling is standard-tint it with a wall color, in proportion more then usual, so it won't feel like a box with a white lid (usual proportion is around 5-10%..that' what good painters do when painting rooms. In rooms with standard ceilings and dark walls you might want to go as high as 50%..check it all of course beforehand, play with the proportion. every room has its own light thus its own rules. it won't make a room darker; it will create the illusion of a higher ceiling though, and prevent the white lid effect). If the ceiling is higher, then you have less to worry. But I'd tint the ceiling some anyway. Also, crown molding helps a lot in these cases..the line where walls and ceilings meet seems softer and somehow more pleasing to the eye. If you leave your paint semi gloss-it will also create the illusion of a room less dark, because the sheen is so reflective. Add art you love, and generally have fun with it-a rug in a richer tome/interesting pattern, a shower curtain that picks up the color, even just in a tiny detail, a little plant, an interesting mug instead of a regular toothbrush holder..you won't pay attention to the tiles you're not a fan of, because the bathroom will have other things you love, in abundance. Disclaimer: everything I suggest here, I went through myself..))...See MoreSmall bathroom/powder room design help!
Comments (3)The vanity IMO would the 1st thing to go and keep the rest of the finishes simple. So I have no idea how big the space is but if it is a PR why have the shower at all so maybe a bit more info would help. I like floor and shower walls all the same to make spaces feel bigger and I really do not like subway tile in showers since the more grout the more work to keep clean ....See MoreHelp for small powder room
Comments (21)Another vote to keep the beautiful (!!!) vanity cabinet as is, just replace hardware. The black countertop might be a bit much now, but since you say you need to keep it, work with it. Replace the backsplash...or maybe just remove it all together, patch the wall, caulk the seam where countertop meets it and paint with high quality washable/wipeable paint. If this is a powder room, it likely won't get as much use as other bathrooms. I have not had backsplashes in any of the bathrooms in my house for 12+ years, they get used everyday, and we have had no problems. Simplify so the vanity can become the focal point...The sconces are too big, and the mirror frame is not right for the style of the vanity. I would suggest replacing all of the towel hardware and maybe the faucet in a finish that coordinates with the hardware you choose for the vanity knobs/pulls. Wallpaper or even just some art would make a huge difference. The painting reflected in the mirror is too small, too traditional and understated in my opinion. Don't be afraid to be bolder in a powder room, and if the art has some black in it, the countertop will "belong" better. Have fun with your redo!...See Moremolega2008
