Sowing annual vinca in the ground?

Maryland zone 7.

I ordered 2000 seeds and didn’t realize they need to germinate in the dark. I have a long strip beside my fence I hoped to put the seed down in May. I had success doing the same last year with marigolds.

Is it possible to get them to germinate with a light coating of soil? I need way too many to start indoors.

I wonder if rolling some landscape fabric over them will provide the darkness needed?

If not, I’ll do marigolds again,

All you have to do is cover them with soil....just a light covering as deep as the seeds are in size. When I grow Catharanthus, I dust a layer of my germination medium on top of the sown seeds and water them in with a misting nozzle.

The problem is that Catharanthus takes a long time to germinate and develop unless the soil is warm, at least is my experience. My heating cables have an automatic thermostat that keeps the germination flats at about 68F.

I used to know how long it takes for outdoor soil to warm up once the air temperature began to rise but I've forgotten the calculation.

Get yourself a row cover. They are about 4 or 5 feet by 25 feet. They are not very expensive and they will warm the soil and let the light in and water in. Remove a bit of soil. Water the ground and plant your seed. Then give them a very light covering of reserved soil. A few upended pots or hoops will keep the row cover from flattening the plants as they emerge. Cover them with the row cover and secure the sides and ends with soil or stones or wood so the light row cover doesn't blow away. Be sure to water as the soil tends to dry with the heat created by the sun through the row cover. Row covers raise the air temperature under it and the soil temperature. They retain 80% of the light and moisture goes right through them but it does make the light fabric heavy and that's why I suggest upended pots or small hoops. You can make hoops with wire clothes hangers. With wire cutters clip off the hanger part and untwist the top. Straighten the hanger and bend into a hoop.

I tried an experiment with row covers one year. I had 2 perennials that were the same variety and roughly the same size. I cut a piece of row cover and covered 1 as they were emerging from the soil. In 3 weeks the 1 I covered was more than twice as big as the 1 left uncovered. I removed the cover and that slowed down it's growth and eventually they were both the same size but it did prove to me the worth of row covers

gardengal48 - 'Vinca' (note my inverted commas) is a de facto common name in so far as I have seen it frequently used on these forums for Catharanthus roseus. In the UK its common name is Madagascar periwinkle, so it seems to be a US habit to call it 'Vinca'. (see link) Catharanthus roseus , the tender perennial, was once known as Vinca rosea, but no longer. It is not in the same genus as Vinca and is not a species of Vinca. At least not until someone does some DNA work and decides to reclassify it. kato_b - there are variegated Vinca minors as well as Vinca major, so not all variegated forms are V major. In the UK both are used as ground cover and as trailers in containers and both are hardy everywhere. Catharanthus is a tricky plant here because we just don't have enough sun and heat. I have grown Somniferum very successfully for many years, but all but one time they where direct seeded. They do best if they are scattered, very early in the spring, preferably on snow, or so I have been told and they did great that way for me. But... If you don't have 1000's of seeds, the chances they will land and grow where you want them too may be low. One thing I did though, which may work for you, is I put the seeds into ice cubes! I missed the snow that year, and thought up a compromise and it worked. I 1/2 filled an ice cube tray with water, put 3-5 seeds per cube in the water, let it freeze, added a bit more water, let it freeze (they tend to float, or at least mine did, this helped get them more into the ice). Then, I went outside, and put about 3 cubes in every spot that i wanted a poppy, and... it worked! There is also a topic started about pipe pots being good for transplanting poppies. perhaps try searching for "pipe pot". I think that the trick to moving poppies is getting them when they are small enough, and making sure you don't distrupt the tap root, which I really think this method could accomplish. I have transplanted very small poppies with great success. You just want to make sure you leave "tons" of dirt around them, use a full sized shovel even and pretend you are moving a 3 year old much larger plant! Perhaps you could do some "lasanga gardening" in spots where you want to plant the poppies. Prepare the soil early, lay down newspaper as a weed barrier, then good potting soil on top to plant the poppies in. Mark the spots so you know to leave them when you weed the rest of your beds. Or, you could sow them with the ice cube method, and put a marker in the ground to remind you of where they are and work with much more caution in those areas. perhaps don't even weed those areas until you know for sure that they are not your poppies!!

torenias also self sow , black eyed susans (I know perrenial but i pull mine up)as well as the black eyed susan vine, verbena bonariensis, cypress vine, morning glory, zinnias I always help distribute along with marigolds. I'm not so sure about the leaf damage, but when I see blossom damage like that, the first thing popping into my mind is earwigs. They used to leave my rudbeckia blooms in shreds.

Great advice about the row covers! I use them all the time for my veggies, most of which are planted in situ but didn't think to recommend them for the OP's question.
