Golden oak stain on red oak floors
Comments (18)@Maria P If you are still reading these comments, I want to THANK YOU for sharing. I am having my old red oak and some newly installed red oak floors stained Golden Oak .. right this very minute.. .and I am NERVOUS about it. Like you, I didn't realize the shade of red I was dealing with and didn't realize I couldn't get a lighter, more natural shade unless we bleached the floors. We have already spent a ton of money, so, we, too, are leaning in to the red oak and hoping for the best. Your pics make me hopeful....See MoreHas anyone used 50/50 minwax dark walnut + special walnut on red oak?
Comments (35)You want to avoid applying a second coat of stain. It will cause adhesion issues. What you can do is add some of the stain to a oil base poly, then apply it. Another option is to use poly shade in a similar color. You can apply 2-3 coats of the poly shade to achieve your desired color. Poly shade is oil base. Contractor should have water popped the floor prior to applying the stain. The color would come out darker....See MoreRefinishing red oak floors, would love feedback on stains
Comments (12)Too many samples here.. And whatever you choose will change based on location, lighting, surrounding colors, etc, and that will vary throughout your home. I also like using a stain without a custom mix. If you have to re-do a small section later, there's no problem matching. Choose something you like and don't stress about how it appears in one particular spot; the overall effect is far more important. FWIW, we redid our red oak floors using weathered oak and couldn't be happier. We were looking for something that added a little grey but still looked natural, and it does exactly that. Good luck!...See MoreRed Oak + Weathered Oak Duraseal = HELP!!! So red & pink!
Comments (9)Karen, I love it. You have helped me decide on the stain for our red oak. We have white oak upstairs and red oak downstairs. After seeing your floors and Chris Loves Julia’s white oak in Duraseal’s “weathered gray”, I’m sold. Like you, I thought I wanted the on trend natural white oak look but, in reality, it lacks the warmth that I want in my home. Yours is both light and warm!...See MoreSJ McCarthy
