Rose Gardens in and around San Francisco
Comments (13)Buford the Vintage garden hasn't been open for a long time. Right now there is house demolition and construction too. I haven't been to the gardens at Alcatraz, but it really seems like a fun excursion. I think you would enjoy Filoli, though I was unimpressed with the rose garden. The Morcum Garden and the Berkeley rose garden are nice. The SJHRG and the San Jose municipal rose garden are minutes away from each other. There is also the Santa Clara University fence(near both these). It's a (I think) mile of climbers and ramblers. There is a small rose garden at Mission Delores(SF). I think it would only be an hours drive to go to the Sacramento Historic Cemetery Garden. This would be the one not to miss. I know you'll have lots of fun....See MoreNORTHERN California Roll Call !!!!!

Those hardier Mexican varieties should easily survive your winters, as some of your other fruit trees and shrubs are not even that hardy. Mexicola tolerates at least 20f, which is like a once in a lifetime cold snap. The bigger challenge is the soil and heat. Also, if your cherries are not prolific, then that's a good sign that you microclimate isn't getting a ton of chill hours, which would bode well for the avos. When I was growing up in Walnut Creek, we had tons of cherries and stone fruit, benefiting somewhat from a dry creek bed behind our property that would funnel in cold air in the winter. After my parents moved to a property less than a mile away with some elevation, they had almost no frost anymore, and the stone fruit and cherries don't produce like they did at the other property. However, they can grow more tender things much better. Sounds like you might be in a similar spot which is probably pretty good all-around for a lot of different types of plants. Would love to see some pictures of your subtropical fruit trees....See MoreWhat it really cost living in No Cal?
Comments (39)The fog is really a northern CA phenomenon. Mainly because of the colder water currents. In Southern CA (south of Big Sur/Cambria), the water currents are a lot warmer. So we have cold ocean water against the land mass. But the fog, as noted in many posts, stays pretty close to the coastline during the summer. We're about 6 miles inland and get some of that fog, altho it burns off earlier in the day than it does closer to the water. And we don't have fog every day! The fog situation is also affected by the ins and outs of the coastline. Santa Cruz is usually warmer and sunnier than Monterey, on the other side of the Monterey Bay. But a typical summer weather pattern here is night and morning low fog along the coast, burning off by mid-morning. You can drive 20 or 30 miles inland and have hot weather. It can be 65 here and 90 up in Gilroy during the day. And it can be 65 at night and 90 during the day. But San Francisco and Monterey are usually a lot more moderate than the hot inland areas like Sacramento or Fresno. We also have mild winters, so we have no complaints at all! I want to know what's happened, too! Angc... are you out there? Or out here?...See MoreTrip to California
Comments (32)There are also a number of festivals that may coincide with your travels along the coast. These two come to mind: http://gilroygarlicfestival.com/ http://centralcoastoysterfestival.com/ The Exploratorium in SF is in a new location now and I haven't been there but the old place was great. I imagine the new space is even better. http://www.exploratorium.edu/ There is always something to do/see at Golden Gate Park. http://www.golden-gate-park.com/ On the Peninsula below SF is Filoli Mansion in Woodside. Beautiful gardens and mansion. http://www.filoli.org/ Here is a link that might be useful: List of food related festivals in CA.
