Building in FLORIDA..???
Comments (6)We once toured a very expensive model home near here, and the lack of detail and quality of construction was appalling. They even had cheap hollow core doors throughout. I've been in FL 27 years, and rarely see a home with any 'style', unless it's an older one. Part of it is the tract home mentality, and part of it may have been to appeal to retirees who no longer want to do the maintenance that goes along with nice trim....See MoreCali Bamboo Pictures & Experience PLEASE!
Comments (3)got the samples today and they are amazing. did all kinds of rediculous tests to them for fun. this fossilized stuff is no joke! i took some pics of the two colors against my current african teak, will post later! i wish there was a color BETWEEN java and natural. the java is dark and the natural is VERY blonde. still want pictures!...See MoreLigustrum Tree Alternative
Comments (11)Pineapple guava would be a good candidate ... forgot about that one. Clumping bamboo keeps spreading out creating a larger clump and it is labor intensive to dig out to keep it where you want it. It may become a problem with your fence later on down the road. I, personally, would not do bamboo next to a pvc fence. Seriously, you'd need an electric saw that would work in the soil to get it cut out and keep it in bounds. I know this first hand. I have both clumping and running. The running is the easiest to cut to keep in bounds. I can cut through it with lobbers. The clumping gets so densely packed it is pretty much impossible to cut through ... or at least I have not found a way. Just my two cents, but with your type of yard I would avoid bamboo....See MoreRoses in FL
Comments (7)Sarasota? You have a great rose society around you last time I checked. I'd definitely join them for local advice. Given your location I would venture to say that you'll have a tough time getting your collections to set in. My advice would be to start them up in big pots, making sure to bury the graft, and give it a year or two before planting them. With luck the plant with set off roots on its own. If it roots pass the base of the pot, it's a great sign. I would take a gander at the offerings over at Nelson's Roses and find a local nursery that sells their plants. The high season for rose sales begins around November through May so your local nurseries may start ordering as soon as October. You also have another supplier of roses on Fortuniana that I can't remember the name of and is close to where you live. Of course, there's always my old friends at Cool Roses, but they are farthest away from you geographically. Your right-now problem will right itself with the upcoming season. I take care of weeds with cardboard and mulch until right about now when nothing works, lol. I just scrape scale off as I see it. I found that when my spray program is on point the scale doesn't stand a chance. I have some gardenias that scale flock to that I've begun to spray and the little buggers have all but disappeared. Thanks Chris for the Marigold suggestion. I've never heard about that and I will be researching it now. What UF has suggested is 1.) plant in the dirt while still in the pot. Nematodes are said to only attack the first couple of inches of soil and creating a barrier might help the struggle, and 2.) plant close or next to hard surfaces like sidewalks or houses. The root system is said to find shelter under the hard surface where nematodes are not as likely to live. In any case, good luck and keep us posted. We're about to enter our growing season in the fall and spring, so get ready to enjoy your roses. -Adrian....See Moreirma_stpete_10a
