Lighting Design Dilemma Kitchens

Hello, I have a hob on an island and want to hang 3 pendant lights over the island. Which pendant lights can I use near/over a hob? Do they need a certain specification to cope with steam/grease?

Our hob will have a built in extractor fan, so that will help limit the steam etc.

I can also hang the lights high as the ceiling is 3m.

Any ideas/suggestions are welcome!

Sounds great.................I'd just be going for something with a good surface , easy to clean. You will need to get inside the lamp, so you need to think about getting your hand in, to remove the bulb and clean inside it. thus something like this would be easier

than something like this, which is narrow and hard to get in to:-

It isn't advisable due to fire regs and heat damage to put any lights directly over a hob. You could consult the local building regs department at your council whom will let you know how close you can put a light source to a hob for safety reasons. A good electrician would probably also know.

Then, you could approach a lighting company for advice on which lights may be more heat resistant than others such as types of glass, which, would also be easy to clean.

Do you have an extractor over the hob to aid lighting?

Hello, thanks for your help. We are going to get and extractor built into the hob. So no lights over the island currently...

Lighting is very personal, and as you've probably found there are thousands of options. What is your general style - contemporary, traditional, glamorous, other? Would you also be interested in a linear light over your island? (I have a 10'+ island and went with this linear light, but your style might be very different.) It would also help to know if you've narrowed down a finish. I'm confused again! You mention 5 x 11', which I took to be your island, but in your drawing it looks more like 6'. I'm showing you ideas more in keeping with your drawing. Guidelines on pendant lighting for islands are: end lights are at least 6" in from the edge, lights are 30-32" apart, and hung 30-36" above the island. With your high ceiling you would go toward the higher end. (I did not establish that each of these lights could be hung from the height of your beam, but you would need to be sure of that when considering lights.) Your inspo lights are nice. In my kitchen they wouldn't work because I don't like the glare of bare bulbs or the constant cleaning needed with clear glass. I would prefer lighting that did not emphasize the lack of symmetry in the cabinets beyond the island. It's so unfortunate that, you have that beam there. If a dome size light is what you're looking for I'd go with a 23-27 inch dome. Other than that, i would use something similar to this picture.

The lights don’t have to go directly over the hob. They can sit above the line of the back of the hob.

Thanks so much for your help. Good point about easy access for cleaning! I’m also going to avoid glass and go for metal so it doesn’t show steam and is a bit more forgiving with the cleaning.
