Happy April! How's your building going?
Comments (124)We have been getting rain about 3 days a week for the last month and the framers finally got the roof sheathing finished today. The roofers started stocking materials today and will start on the roof in the morning..plumber starting rough in tomorrow, HVAC rough in on Wednesday, and electrical on Thursday...these crews have worked together many times and will work together on who has the "right of way". A window goes in the big gables and vents go in the smaller ones, The framers still have some OSB to put on and some wrap then it is on to the windows...going with James Hardie siding on the majority of the house and James Hardie shake shingles on the larger gables and stone around the front door and windows. Everything sounds good on paper but things never go as easy as planned. Going to be 85 the next 3 days and then a high of 45 and rain for the 3 days after :(...See MoreIt's April 2014 - Part II1, how is your build?
Comments (150)jdez or shall I call you Jae? :) -are you finished insulating? What is next in your DIY world? So the blasted soffit! Argh! The main hugemongous support beam goes right through there and that is why there is a soffit. Who puts soffits in these days, everyone is busy taking them OUT! Boo! So I *think* the crown will be in front of it and up to it so you won't see a big gap. I hope to find out when I get home from work tomorrow. See, see I told ya! It IS Seattle Mist and it does look gray in the kitchen. Crazy color but I do really love it reading both ways. Island stain is gray but the wood reads through yet. It's called silas and it has a black glaze over it - Shiloh cabinetry. Good grief I hope the floors are life proof but they are wood so they will patina. They are hickory and more rustic with the hand scraping, etc. which I hope will help hide all that 2 boys and a dog have to offer. With it being so open I didn't want a huge transition in flooring so we kept the living/dining/kitchen all wood. So yes, to accommodate the MW and the fridge (or keep it from sticking way out) we pulled those base cabs on the fridge wall forward 6" and the uppers there are 18 or 19" deep, I already can't remember. Doh. Anyhow, with it being so open I didn't want 6" of the side of the fridge hanging out. Bonus that the counter will also be deeper there and that is where I anticipate the toaster and coffee pot to live as well as it being lunch making station. They should all be easily tucked out of view too. I have a very love HATE relationship with FB myself and typically only get on there when prompted by someone else. I have worked in purchasing or materials besides a brief 11 year stint in healthcare when we started a family. Healthcare because they offer part time work and quite a variety of it. So now my kiddos are older and I am back in Purchasing but not in automotive or manufacturing anymore. Breath of fresh air to do something different but still in purchasing. I like numbers and I like variety. I too hope it's happy and long lasting as I am not a job hopper kinda girl. Thanks for not asking, lol. I don't mind. ;) Michelle-thank you. They are pre-finished solid hickory. They had 2 stains and we picked the lighter one (tobacco I think they call it), the other is more a java really deep color. We thought it would show too much dust so we stuck with this one and I like it. It also kind of grounds it as the fireplace and mantle were looking a little formal to me and I think the floor adds back some casual feel. We are not formal people at all. So mini-rant - dh is adamant about wanting cup pulls. 1 - I don't like them as I like to reach from the top not the bottom and 2 - what? why on earth does he care about the pulls and 3 - who uses the kitchen and not just to get a glass for a drink. Pfft. Shaking head. I hope he doesn't mind me going out to the barn when he's building it and insisting on flower boxes or something........turkey. Unfortunately for him I am just as adamant about NOT wanting them. I get his point, they would look nice and I get it he likes the look but they'd drive me nuts to use so it's a no go....See MoreIt's April, 2017. How is your build progressing?
Comments (195)We have only purchased finished homes in the past. Our plan is somewhat custom as in we drew it from scratch with a local home design business (that many builders in the area use) but after reviewing hundreds of plans online/in person we aren't doing anything drastically unique. It's basically a collection of a bunch of different inspiration homes we have. We also have the good fortune to be connected to a solid tradesman in new home construction who referred some trusted subs. I was very cautious about this idea my when husband pitched it but after a lot of research it makes sense for us!...See MoreApril 2018: How's your house living?
Comments (31)How's your home living? -oh it''s living. la vida loca. lol. always looks like it's damn well pleased with itself. me, on the other hand..)) Do you love it? -oh yes. wanted to burn it to the ground numerous times, but we do love it. "I hated you; I loved you, too" What would you change if anything. -myself. also, the fireplace is one crooked abomination-just last minute screw up. not on me-but needs to be fixed. other things..well I don't know. We should gut that only bath we didn't gut-it flooded anyway lol. The only old drain in the house(we gutted and added..this bath was the only thing that partially stayed). Also. Love my kitchen-but if I knew what I know now..mybe I'd rethink the concept. Then I'd have big problems with flooring though. Am not sure. Would you ever build again, or hell no? -umm. on one hand-HELL NO. on the other hand-my brain got really twisted..I somehow got into this "how I'd do it" mode. On a theoretical level. I enter a house or an apartment or whatever-I'm immediately into details and whether job well done or poorly and what I'd do. Can't shake it off. Were the heartaches and time worth it? -Depends when I'm asked. Today-no. It's not a kid. With all my love-and I get very emotionally attached to houses, and I loved this one, I felt for it deeply, it's alive to me, it's so alive-yet it's still a house. But who can predict these things. I hoped it'd be worth it. It maybe was. Maybe it is-and I just don't know. Not today. Upcoming projects? -have to do hardscaping/landscaping of the backyard(we moved year and a half ago..can't catch a breath since then. We're supposed to be long finished with it-haven't even started yet). To redo the fireplace-really bothers me. To improve the mirrors situation in master. I have an elegant idea-just no energy to execute it. To hang art that's not hung yet. To frame art that's waiting to be framed)) Decorating/organizing tips? -oh. a) add storage wherever you can. Have a plan-why I add it? What I want from it? how it will function? b) know and learn your house and thyself, from less obvious things and untangibles like character and quirks, unique to your house and your family, to very obvious things like measurements..always stick a measuring tape in your purse..have a paper with plan and dimensions..have a notebook with your notes and a pen..just always have it on you. You never know when you'll need it. I spent two years of my life like that. Ah. And have main things saved in different formats. Say I have 20 or so paints in my house(including different sheens etc)-but I also have a very detailed comprehensive list, on paper, on computer, eveywhere. Save references. c) never, ever hurry. Never go for one store only even if you love it crazily, even if you can afford it. Good rooms can't emerge in a day. Don't buy placeholders if you can-most things can wait. Do find a small stuff that makes your every day a bit happier-a plant, a coffee cup, a whatever. don't shy away from second hand if you can(some people can't and I totally respect it)-they made things better:) Even 20 years ago. Thank you for opening a great thread-and I enjoyed reading everybody's replies, and being Eeyore myself:)...See Morerdy2retire
