Living Room Fireplace

I am looking to construct a fireplace with an electric insert. can anyone give me any tips on pointers on my design sketch? I am looking to add builtins on both side for the AV equipment, how deep do these need to be? Also I would like to reset the tv in the wall so it’s not protruding above the fireplace, how deep should that reces typically be?

The very FIRST thing you must check is the specs for the fire, and the requirements/ code for mounting a tv/mantel above it, and the the depth of any venting required, which is usually straight UP, no elbow.

Then consult an AV guy as built ins for the "equipment" has become a thing of the past. The little equipment can go anywhere unless you are referring to a vinyl collection, and turn table.

As to a custom recess for the tv? I wouldn't do it. TV's change at the speed of light.

Well the fireplace insert is electric and not gas, therefore there is no need for venting and it will not affect the mantel or tv above it. As far as resetting I was referring to 3inch or so reset that I have seen people do so that the TV and the mount sit flush and not stick out. So where am I suppose to hide my cable box, Blu-ray player and Surround sound audio receiver?

I will be getting new lamps for the space. Also a new light fixture for the ceiling. I've considered small floating shelves but I'm not quite sure. The ones suggested from Ikea are so inexpensive I could possibly give it a try. Or maybe neutral tone on tone wallpaper/stencil might work to just give the wall some interest.

Are you sure you want to mount the tv in that location? Not a great place for relaxed viewing. IMO the tv will become such a dominate feature in that location that no matter what you do to enhance the area with built-ins or pretty matching chest, the tv will cancel all your efforts to make that area a beautiful spot. Another issue is the neck pain that results from viewing a tv placed that high. Post more pictures, I am sure you will receive more wonderful suggestions for this room. Notice the two pictures posted by armchairshopper does not make the tv the highlight. Those two pictures show what a beautiful area that wall can become. Take your time and think it thru, even if it means saving for new furniture that is sized better for the room.

I've had both vented and ventless from Petersen Real Fyre and they both looked very good. Be careful about measurements and make sure you get the largest that will fit, so they fill the fireplace. Is your fireplace designed for direct vent, with a separate intake for combustion air? If you don't install glass doors it will be easier to make them look realistic, but will also be much less efficient. The gas logs installer is supposed to block the flue open (for safety), so you are not supposed to be able to open and close it after they are installed. Bruce

I am a fan of neutrals, but in the case of this room, you need some color. I would find a rug with gray, beige and .....pick a third color. I would find an area rug to place over the carpeting. Gray can complement a variety of colors. Then you can pick up the third color from the rug and start placing it around the room. If possible, I would move the big recliner elsewhere. It throws off your seating arrangement. I don’t like of mirrors over a fireplace. For me, mirrors should either reflect a view from outside or serve a purpose such as placed where you to see yourself like in a front hallway foyer. Art over the fireplace, and a more substantial end table.
