Caterpillars. Anyone have any quick solutions?

Hello everyone. I have some fruit trees and regular Oaks and Pines in my yard located here in Long Island (7a). Last year the caterpillars ate a lot of the leaves on the fruit trees. Some of the oaks and pines that hang over my deck, they climb up and poop constantly all over the deck. It's really annoying. So I was wondering what others thought and how they handled this. I seen some of those kits that they sell to wrap the tree but I was wondering if there is something you can do with whats on hand. I actually seen my father wrap some of his trees with duct tape, sticky side out, but he smeared automobile lubricating grease on the duct tape hahahaha. It worked really well, but I'm worried when it rains if toxins will drip out of the grease once it gets wet. So what do you guys think would be a good safe alternative to the automobile grease lol?

What type of caterpillars are we talking about? Are they the tent caterpillars?

Certain if not most caterpillars hatch from egg sacks which are deposited by the adult moths up in tree branches so sticky tapes placed on the lower trunk won't be of much help for these cats.

I don't know about whatever might be in the picture, but I do know that many of the bugs you listed (stink bugs, wasps, ants, etc) will eat caterpillars. What I usually do is search for the eggs and put them in a container to hatch and raise. This also prevents them from being parasitized. The eggs are small spheres - yellow to yellow/green in appearance. I usually find them on the tip of leaf. Once you train your eye to look for the eggs it becomes fairly to easy to spot. The shape looks like a geometrid, but it appears to have too many legs. Geometrids have only one pair of abdominal prolegs and I think I see at least three. Do you have another picture that shows the legs better?

What if you look at different trims and things to make your own? You'll need to measure and see how much room you have to work with but they make trim that is pretty flat that you could always use to get the effect that you want. I'm not sure what you would want to use to attach the trim to the window but it would have to be something that could handle the temp and moisture changes that glass windows go through throughout the day and year. I wouldn't see anything wrong with the grids in the link either. They probably look plastic because they're either not all wood or it's the paint sheen they used for durability. It's one of those things where you have to decide if you want the grids or want them to be wooden grids more. I mean, if really want the grids, you can see past things like what they are made out of. You're going for the overall look of the door from a distance more than right up close where you can see what they are made out of. Most windows today don't even have wooden grids because plastic holds up longer. If that doesn't work, what about something like the Gallery Glass or try taping off areas and frosting or something. They wouldn't be actual grids but it would look like it. Someone I know, can't remember now (BIL and SIL maybe?) have something on their windows that looks like tape or paint that makes it appear that they have those grids..... Good luck!

Dianalo, you could have been describing me when you were talking about your clean floors. Sometimes I feel like I should look into getting some therapy. I don't think we are normal. Anyway, I have been very happy with my Electrolux Eurorapido cordless rechargable broom. I keep it plugged and in my den closet for constant access. It's solid quality and picks up everything, including pet hair. I can even use it on the carpet on stairs. But I am anxious to hear about your experience with the roomba. My motto is that you can never have too many vacuums!

Organic spray like MONTEREY GARDEN INSECT SPRAY with SPINOSAD, should take care of the caterillars.

Bt, Bacillus thuringiensis, is the standard recommendation for caterpillar control. It is considered completely organic, safe to use around kids or pets and targets only caterpillars. It need to be applied as soon as you see the cats feeding on the foliage.

Sticky traps will not work on cats :-) But if these are tent caterpillars, clipping or pruning out the tents as soon as you see them, then destroying them is also effective. But regardless of method or product, if the trees are large, control will be spotty or sporadic unless you can spray ALL the leaves or clip out ALL the tents.

Moses: Thank you I will check into that. Is this something that you just spray around the tree trunk or the whole tree. I have really tall oaks too so will not be able to reach any leaves.

Gardenangel: Thank you and I will check your recommendation out as well. Same question, do you spray just the trunk or the whole tree? I just remember seeing them climbing up the trees in numbers. My father wrapped the tree and there were a lot that crawled right up to it and wouldn't go any further. So they had to be coming from below.

I am really not liking the idea of spraying. If I was to use petroleum jelly on some kind of wrap around the tree, will it hurt the tree when it rains on the jelly, like would any toxins drip down out of the jelly?
