Black counters, matte or glossy?

I am having my cabinets professionally painted creamy white and plan to do subway tile back splash (matte finish) and black counters - i like a timeless design - would you go with matte or glossy quartz countertops? Thanks!

I'm not a fan of glossy in any color in a kitchen. The only think I like shiny is my clean windows, my brass, my copper and other metals. That's enough shine for me.

Remember, shinny black will show every single finger mark.

Thanks Ginad! =) We have matte tiles in one bathroom, and glossy in another, and they both look great. The traditional, classic subway tile has tended to be glossy if that's what you're doing for. I'd always loved the look of tumbled marble subway tiles but since we chose granite countertops, the colouring of tumbled marble wouldn't have worked with it and tumbled marble is higher maintenance. I looked into the Ann Sacks handmade tiles, noticed it came in matte, and presto...the matte/non-shiny look I loved, but in a colour that worked with my granite. I agree with the others that you can get the best of both worlds with a shiny and matte tile combination. But your granite needs to be relatively quiet...not too busy...or busy counters and a busy backsplash will be too many fighting elements. I don't find that our matte backsplash reads too "casual" at all...it all depends on the other elements in your kitchen. I think it's partially because our tiles are also handmade which give it more character and colour variation. If they were machine-made matte tiles I may think otherwise. Yes, I think it would be okay to do a glossy granite island, honed counter for the perimeter with glossy tiles. That may just solve some of your doubts.

Interesting. In real life my wife likes the glossy and I'm leaning toward matte. The cabinet company says the glossier finish will gradually fade to a matte-like finish over time. Now, pictures can be deceiving. They are not really "glossy". More like a satin finish. And they both look much closer to black than brown in real life.

we have leathered (honed?) absolute black perimeters and in each of the three bathrooms the island is butcher block and we love it no fingerprints, stuff (crumbs, flour etc) does show but clean up is easy and looks great i've had a very high end granite with lots of movement and i don't clean up any more now than i did then and i disliked it a lot......i wouldn't choose a "shiny" finish for the island but i'm not going to say it wouldn't be attractive... bil has absolute black (shiny) and it is difficult to keep looking nice...

Definitely matte, or you will forever battle fingerprints, dust, etc.

I vote matte. Matte has a soft feel and can be a timeless look.

We did leathered black granite. It was my husband’s choice. I actually love it. Unlike the glossy finish, the leathered is easy to keep looking nice.

Not glossy! We had that in a previous house and it drove me insane - after wiping it clean I had to then use granite cleaner to remove the streaks and fingerprints.

I will never have a polished counter in a home again! I LOVE the honed/leathered/etc look! It’s warm and inviting and holds up better imho

Another vote for matte. I have both matte and polished in my kitchen and the polished is a beast to keep smudges and fingerprints off of. The matte is a dream!

I had glossy absolute black granite counters. I loved them. I could see where they needed cleaning. But, I am in the minority. Any of your choices will be timeless.

Quartz is usually a duller sheen. But, you will want to check on that. Also, real absolute black granite honed or leathered is still less expensive than quartz. It depends upon what kind of deal you can work. I would price both. Be sure you are pricing real absolute black granite. There are some inferior slabs that are dyed. Ask about it.

Thanks to all who took the time to comment. My preference is definitely matte finish. My goal is to create a kitchen that is timeless as well as beautiful.

Although my counters had one too many mishaps with installation, I LOVE the leathered finish and will never go back to polished! I definitely think it’s all personal preference...I’m fairly OCD when it comes to cleaning and seeing every scuff and smudge on polished used to kill me
