cold-weather harvest
Comments (2)Dorothy, Y'all have been busy and it sounds like all the fall experimentation gave you some good results. Obviously I didn't have much of a fall garden since it is hard to grow veggies in the almost total absence of rainfall. I'm hoping for more rain next year, but not counting on it. I've grown turnips outside the veggie garden fence in previous years, and the deer haven't bothered them, but every year it is mostly a different bunch of deer, so I don't necessarily think this year's herd would leave anything alone--they are pretty hungry. Ever since I started order from Baker online, they seem less inclined to send me a catalog. I don't know why. I still like to look at and ready the paper catalogs even if I do go and order online because it is quicker. I'm on the fence about ordering any seeds because I just don't see us planting a large garden if rain doesn't fall. I still have plenty of older seed from previous years, though, so I could plant a garden I'd be perfectly content with without ordering much fresh seed. Well, think I'll have to get corn seed but that's about it. I'm not looking forward to this cold night, but once we get it past us, at least we'll be warming up a little. And, while watching the weather coverage of all the snow in the northeastern US today, I thought to myself "at least we don't have that!". Ilene, I think you've had some great results from your cold frame. Gonefishin' always had a hotbed underneath his coldframe, with a combination of fresh horse manure/stable bedding, and the heat from the decomposition of that manure/bedding kept his plants from freezing on some very cold nights. I think he had double dug his bed beneath the cold frame and had the hot manure beneath and then several inches of regular soil on top so his plants could grow in regular soil but benefit from the heat of the decomposing manure. I miss Gonefishin'....he was such an inspiration to me. Dawn...See MoreDoes Cold Weather Affect Tomatoes (Not Freezing Cold)
Comments (6)That's a shame. Our winters are off and on, and most nurseries have them already, and only one that I know of keeps them inside a greenhouse that's heated. It was about 45 last night and will be probably below 40 tonight. I have 5 planted, and am covering them at night with pots, and the rest are still in pots or seed trays, and I'm bringing them in at night. I'll see how those that are already planted do this spring. I'm tired of not getting more than a few tomatoes....See MoreWood contracting in cold weather
Comments (2)In a word, yes. Almost everything shrinks as the temperature decreases. How much it shrinks is dependent on material type. Typically the humidity decreases with temperature so this moisture loss or drying will also cause shrinkage. The screen should have adjustable rollers that set the door inside the track to accomodate these types of movements. HTH...See MoreAmana PTAC Issue - Have to keep resetting in cold weather
Comments (16)Couldn't find the exact diagnositics manual, but here's some interesting comments on a similar Amana Heat Pump: "I know this is late but I had to add a solution to this problem since I had the exact same problem and was able to solve it. The probelm is not your control board. On these units, the heat pump compressor will not kick in unless the temperature you set on the control panel is within 2-1/4 degrees (or 4 degrees depending on your unit model. Otherwise, the unit locks out the compressor until the electric heat coil bring the indoor temperature up to that level - and then will switch the compressor back on for heat pump operation. So the problem is not the control panel or the compressor, it the electric heat coil. The coil has two manual limit switches on it that may be tripped and should be checked. The coil can be easily accessed by shutting down the power, removing 4 screws around the air outlet, pushing the screen up and sliding the panel out the top. The power wires can remain in place while the limit switches are reset. Hope it works." "I had a problem with the heat not coming on in really cold weather. After much reserch and trial and error I a came to the conclusion that the heating coil was not coming on. The cool will reverse on the first stage, heating coil will come on in the second stage. Take the front cover off of the unit. Unscrew the screws on the wire mesh and the two screws on the front below them. Pull out the wire mesh and put it aside. Slowly lift the heatng coil assembly striaght up. Grab the area you just took the screws out of. Once you get the coil out you will see the wires are conected to some terminals. On top of one of the terminals it the MANUAL RESET. It does not say it but it has a button on top. Mine was the one on the far left. Push it in till it clicks. Reassemble the unit in reverse. Mine works fine now." Found at fixya, http://www.fixya.com/support/t1197063-amana_ptac...See Morewxcrawler
