They do drop seed pods that are large and they are decidous. Pretty flowers tho.

contact your county extension office and see if they have a list of trees for your area ...

personally.. i would never plant a monoculture .... just in case some plague rolls thru ....

They are actually evergreen (not deciduous) but the seed pods can be an issue. But I agree that 12 of these may be excessive for a 120' length! Since they can develop a canopy spread of 30' or more, 5 might be a more appropriate number :-))

So, I've spoken with some people who have these trees here in Las Vegas and they say that they don't have seed pods. Is it possible that it produces seed pods in some places but not here in Las Vegas? Also, is it that some trees are female and some are male?

Their trees may not have matured yet. Once they are mature, they will produce seed pots. The tree is dioecious. You can count on it.

Edit: Well now I have seen one source saying the tree is monoecios and another saying it is dioecious. If you have multiple trees, it won't matter, some would be male and others female, and you will get seed pods. If the tree is monoecious after all, the tree will have both male and female reproductive parts -- and you will get seed pods. I have no idea how long it takes for trees to reach maturity. I had a tree that everyone warned me would get seed pods. For close to 10 years, no seed pods. The next few years the quantity of seed pods became massive, and at about age 17 I removed the trees at some expense. Don't think you won't get seed pods. You will.

They are evergreens and do not have seed pods or flowers. I have about 8 of them. I think they may be getting confused between bottle trees and bottle brush trees based on my research. Bottle brush trees havethe pods and flowers.

I have seen stuff about different types of bottle trees that flower, but not one that I've seenon sale at a nursery. I would be interested to see the differences.

The trees in OP's picture are Australian Bottle Trees, Brachychiton populneus, not Bottle Brush, Callistemon sp. When mature enough Brachychiton populneus flowers and produces Large woody fruit.

I can vouch for the fact that B. populneus (which is what the OP is asking about), do indeed have pods. And while their flowers are quite small, in summer they cover the whole tree in sweetly perfumed beauty. Not all trees, so there must be male and female specimens. Or maybe it's a maturity thing. Either way, yes, flowers and pods.

I have certainly more than 100 of these trees growing on my property, and a good proportion are showing seed pods now. (It's autumn here, seed time.)

Never heard of them referred to as "Bottle Trees". To me that'd be a "Boab Tree", Adansonia gregorii.

The common name we use for B. populneus is "Kurrajong".

What do they smell like? Folks have said they're fragrant.

Also, one of mine is drooping. Any clue as to what would make that happen? It's on a 1 gph drip system that runs for 30 minutes every 3 days.

Is that in a pot? Whatever, I'd turn off the irrigation. These are possibly the most drought-hardy tree in Australia. You may be able to see from my pics above, I've lost literally hundreds of endemic native trees, shrubs and grasses over the past year, in one of the hottest and driest times in this country's history. But B. populneus doesn't even blink.

Farmers commonly cut their branches off to use as a last resort stock-feed for sheep and cattle when pastures have disappeared and they can't afford to buy hay or grain.

They're always the last tree standing when rain dries up. I've never noticed any fragrance from leaves or pods, but the summer flowers are nicely perfumed. I'm not going to run up the hill now to take a whiff!

Thanks. I've reduced the irrigation (and removed the drip system by this tree), but it's started drooping more and the leaves are turning brown. Any advice before it dies? The other 10 of them are thriving. I can't figure out why this ONE is different.

A 90% success rate is still pretty good. I can't diagnose your problem tree from here, but sometimes (often!) plants just die for no apparent reason. Could be an issue with soil/potting medium, watering regime, not enough sunshine (more is better) or simply genetics. You didn't say whether they're in pots or in the ground.

You're not fertilising them are you?

No fertilization, in the ground (not pots), and watering according to local arborist suggestion. He said the soil was ok but too wet, so I cut back and eventually eliminated watering for that tree. The soil is still moist, but not overly wet or dry.

Well, I'd cut off the water as you have and let the soil go completely dry and cross my fingers. Their natural habitat is dry, nutrient-poor soil, full sun and weather as hot as possible. We've recently had many months of days of 40C (104F) and hotter, no rain and the trees have never looked better. I suspect that coddling them with water and not enough full sun makes for a weak tree. Don't pamper them...

I live in AZ. Have one gorgeous bottle tree which is 30 ft tall. It is wonderful pods. I use them as decoration in the house. They are black. It grew up in a pot in my house for 10 years. I moved it 3 times to different states when I got jobs. When it got 14 ft high I decided to plant it outside in AZ. It loves it here. Very good shade tree.

My dogs are digging up and eating the roots of my Brachychiton populneus (bottle trees). I can't find anything that says if it's ok for dogs to eat these roots or if they are toxic. Does anyone know? The roots are kind of moist and soft. Thank you much.

I had a bottle tree in my last house. They are a great shade tree and wind break tree. I am going to plant two in my back yard by our fence on the west side for shade against the intense summer sun here in Arizona. They will also serve as a windbreak against our often violent monsoon season. They do drop black pods but they are larger so clean up isn’t much of an issue. They stray green most of the year so they also provide privacy.
