Thermador 24" Refrigerator Columns Hard to Close

We had a Thermador 48" side/side in our last home for 9 years and it was great. We recently moved into a new home and put in two Thermador 24" columns (one freezer, one refrigerator) with the stainless steel panels, and they are a pain to close in that I have to physically close them all the way to actually close. If I just swing the door closed as you normally do, the door never makes it back to close all the way and I have to push it all the way closed. Is this normal for these columns? TIA!

It's not normal, It's possible there is some interference or the installer did not tighten the hinge spring screw.

There was a discussion here a few weeks ago. For a large number of fridges, you actually need to tilt them backwards a little bit during installation, so that the doors will close by themselves. Higher end and commercial models frequently have spring-loaded hinges that have a similar effect. I'd expect for Thermador to be in the later category, but I don't know for sure.

In either case, a properly installed fridge should close the doors by itself. If that doesn't happen, it is likely the installer made a mistake.

Thermador has been at it far longer than subzero so I normally recommend them (or miele or gaggenau which come out of the same factory). They have been very reliable and are well priced. The only instance where the subzero has an advantage is the install with regards to the hinge. If you are installing in a tight space, the hinge on a subzero opens within the width of the unit. So you can put it up against a wall or hinge to handle. In the therm/miele/gag units the hinge is articulating and opens wider than the body of the unit by about 2"

myknobs.com sells long appliance pulls but as they get longer there seem to be fewer finish options. If you want a really long one, you'll probably have to get a stainless steel one. Suggestion: look at photos of refrigerators which do NOT have custom panels on, say, appliances.com. Look at the styles of the pulls and estimate their lengths based on the height of the appliance. Use those as a guide for choosing your own pulls. Also richelieu.com. Another possibility: find an appliance whose handles you like and see if you can buy the handles as spare parts. Also ebay.

In my view, the question should be thought of as two separate questions. The first question is: How much space do I need? That is answered by one's experience and habits. The second question is: Is SZ worth more than Thermador for the same size meeting the space need? I can't advise on relative cost effectiveness, not having ever owned a Thermador. I have a 48-inch wide SZ 632 (counter-depth) side-by-side, and like it. I was surprised that the claims about keeping stuff fresh longer turned out to be true. It is usually packed, but this is a DW issue due to cooking large batches in spite of there only being two of us. We have a separate R/F in the basement, usually well filled but not literally packed. Other features are the top mounted compressors and heat exchanger; this reduces dust/lint buildup. The door edge warming is done by circulating hot refrigerant in the body side, rather than, as in a long-gone GE, by electric heating in the door frame. SZ answers their phone, and tries to provide helpful support. Parts are available for long periods after obsolescence. Counterpart behavior of Thermador is unknown to me.

"I was told by the installer that the columns will not be pushed back all the way into the cavity and I should expect them to stick out 2-3 inches!" Looking at the Thermador T30IR905SP refrigerator -- of the Thermador 1383871 pair (which is what I assume you bought) -- specifications and page 10 of the installation instructions I believe the installer is incorrect. You can even skip a handle with the Thermador TFL30IR905 30" handleless door ($580 yikes!). Eighty pages of installation instructions. Poor guys.

Which model Thermador's columns do have ?? The new Thermador's have a new door assist system that allows for (push to open and auto close). If this is the case check to see what mode the doors are currently set for. It could be set for a delayed automatic door close with no assistance needed from you. I believe you can also completely turn off the door assist option.

The automatic door opening function supports you in

opening the door. As soon as you activate this

function, automatic door opening moves out and

supports you in opening the door.

Open the menu item Aut. door opening:

1. Press " button.

2. Press < button to move to the menu item

Appliance settings.

3. Press 8 button to open the menu item.

4. Use > button to move to the menu item Aut. door

opening.

5. To change the setting, press : button.

Switching on Push-to-open system

In an installation situation without handles you can

select the Push-to-open system. Your appliance will

then open a crack if you press lightly on the door.

1. Open menu item Aut. door opening.

2. Select menu item Push-to-open system.

3. Press 8 button to open the menu item.

4. Select menu item Opening force. Here you can

select the level of force required to activate

automatic door opening.

5. Select menu item Opening duration. Here you

can select how long the door should remain open

a crack before it closes again automatically.

Note: If the door only remains open a crack, the

appliance checks once a second whether the door

is still ajar. After the selected opening time elapses,

the appliance will close the door automatically.

Switching on Pull-to-open system

In an installation situation with handles you can

select the Pull-to-open system. Your appliance will

support you in opening the door as soon as you pull

on the handle.

1. Open menu item Aut. door opening.

2. Select menu item Pull-to-open system.

3. Press 8 button to open the menu item.

4. Select menu item Opening force. Here you can

select the level of force required to activate

automatic door opening.

Switching off automatic door opening

1. Open menu item Aut. door opening.

2. Select menu item Off.

3. Press 8 button.

The setting is saved.
