Help with painting nursery

Hello! I’m trying to brainstorm how to paint the nursery. Currently, there is wall paper on one wall. Im not against keeping it, especially since it’ll be a lot of work to remove/cover. However, I really would like to create a mountain/nature theme. I’m considering painting mountains on the wall(s) but I’m just not sure how to do it. The room is angular and vaulted, which for a more creative person might lend some inspiration. But I’m lost! Please take a look at the pictures and the Pinterest inspiration board link below and tell me your thoughts! Thank you so much!

From your examples, I really like the 'DIY wall mural' mountains, 'winter trees', and '2 pc modern pines'.... But not all together, of course. :)

In general, I'd only hand-paint the vertical walls in this room. The exception would be if I decided to paint the vaulted portions like sky, or sky with just a bit of tree-tops -- but only with deciduous trees (in leaf or not).

Get rid of the wall paper FIRST. It's not that hard. Plenty of you tube videos exit. Peel off the "face" of the paper, spray/wet an area of a few square feet, let it soak in and scrape with a wide blade for that purpose..........gently. . Wash the wall well, and apply a PRIMER.

I agree - nice and not cheap. However, I totally lucked out that they were having a massive sale. They had a big 50% off section, a decent 35% off section, and all one-color plants were 15% off. There was also some deal for the multi-grafts as well. Going there was kind of overwhelming - so many plants in such a small place. I loved seeing the crazy grafting they were doing, though, and the really large trees! It was also nice to view some of the varieties in person that I had previously only seen in books or online. I also enjoyed seeing some of the large succulents - they had plants I've never seen before in my life. Funny, too, that the nursery was named "Upland" because it used to be in Upland, and the owners, in fact, still live there! I told them if they reopened a branch in Upland, I'd be there every day. lol

If you can wait a year or so that would probably be better. That way you could let your baby's personality kind of help guide design decisions. Also, it's not clear which people (or babies) might be susceptible to bad or allergic reactions to different chemicals or fumes until they actually have a reaction. For that reason, and because infants and newborns are physically small so their reaction effects can be relatively more severe healthwise, it's really a good idea to have it done beforehand or wait. Fumes and chemicals may increase the SIDS risk but I doubt there is conclusive evidence at this point (too many possible chemicals to test). Second hand smoke increases SIDS risk in a much more conclusive way. There are low fume paints and products available now. There are also different kinds of carpet or flooring and rug options. Hard flooring is better than carpet if there is a possibility or probability that your baby could have allergies/hayfever/asthma/eczema. You can minimize those risks. Another problem though is dust if there will be renovation work done. That can be minimized with air filters where the baby is. Wood dusts, even without known old lead paints can be health hazards (the natural resins in wood are not good for the tender tissues of the human lung, even if there are no allergies). as long as the plan is that it can wait, let it wait a little longer?

Sorry but that is IMO not a childs room at all except for the crib. That tall bookcase needs to go for sure .It won’t be long until he is in a bed so make sure whatever you do will handle at least a twin bed. This just looks like an adult guest room so IMO start thinking like a child . No table lamps , I think the crib looks like afterthought . Wall paper would be fun or just decals that can change as he ages . A fun rug the low bookcase for sure but honestly this space does not look very large and once a real bed is in there how much space will there be? Maybe post a to scale plan to give me at least a better idea of the space.

FWIW we had our whole house painted passive until a few years ago. It’s a nice grey. In our house it was on the cooler (but not blueish) side and we loved it. I also really like Zurich White which I guess is maybe more of an off white but that can look like a very very light grey/griege depending on the light. BM classic gray is another in that same area that might be worth a look.

what jan said. its just not worth working around something like this. don't paint over it tho, that will just add work down the road when it bubbles and/or the seams always show.

i agree, tree tops, clouds, and birds on the ceiling, mountains would feel closed in.

looks like you'll need to open the door for ventilation; that means once your child is out of their crib you'll need a safer deck rail.... a non-climbable one.

I would embrace the wallpaper and paint the ceiling to match the wallpaper background (same color, lighter shade). If you want to add some color, paint the remaining walls blue. Otherwise, I would paint them dark grey. Can you post a close-up of the wallpaper?

Get rid of the wall paper it is not adding anything to the space. This is your new baby deserves a new space. I love hand painted murals on baby room walls and they can be quite simple and still amazing.These are a couple of easy to do ones

Love the architecture; very cool space!

A mountain scape would work really nicely with the geometry of your room! Murals are great whimsical features especially suited to a nursery. At the same time, it can feel a little forced and, in this case, may compete with the quaint wall paper. Looking at the pinterest board, consider some of the great accessories to achieve the mountain theme and incorporate the theme of the wall paper with additional accessories. Keep the wall color fairly neutral- in the beiges or greens-to add a timeless element to the space and allow the structural character to stand out.
