How to prevent blossom end rot?

My tomatoes keep getting really mushy on the bottom every year. After looking at pictures of tomato problems online, I believe this to be blossom end rot (unless you have another idea). I'm aware this is caused by a calcium deficiency, so in your opinion what is the best way to handle this? Also, I don't know if this contributes but I never grow tomatoes from seed. We simply buy a few small plants at Home Depot in early spring and transplant them into large pots.

On a completely different note, I have some leftover diatomaceous earth from last year and was considering trying it to help with pest control. Do you just sprinkle it on top of the soil? I've never used this before.
