My ZIP Code Appears On Never Patronized Website

candler

Today I looked for large coffee mugs on several sites I'd never accessed. A couple of them already had my Zip code although it was my first visit. It was very strange at best. Am I being hacked? Any idea how to stop it from spreading. Any idea who or what caused it? Thanks. Ron

Probably location based information based on your actual location, or your ISP. You're not being hacked. If you don't like it, you can disable location information or cookies, but it will make sites harder to use and operate.

I used to always put my location setting manually to the middle of a baseball field I spent many hours on as a kid. Now than I've grown old I have moved my location to the middle of a cemetery nearby.

Thanks Steve J. It seems I may have clicked an Internet Options block by mistake. It's the "preserve" one at the top. Good luck.

As said location based, When I Google restaurants and stores it will show me ones near where I am staying not ones back at my home. On mobile devices you can turn off location in your mobile settings, mostly likely the same on windows. I don't turn it off as it's helpful to me when traveling. Mary

If you Google whoami and then click on the link, you'll see your internet IP address and ID/location of your ISP's connection. That's where it comes from.

A smartphone's battery-saving location function (that uses cell tower info and not GPS) is a useful thing to leave turned on for a variety of reasons.
