Yes, Soozd, I do invest my time to try to get design jobs (that means I do not charge for initial meeting). However, that is something that you or I would have to do if we had more inquiries than time to invest. It does weed out some good serious folks among those lighter inquiries, but it leaves ONLY very committed people in the market pool and recovers the expense of dealing with those less serios folks. I did work for a LA/design/build company that had a very high profile garden center on the south shore (MA). We had an average of 30 calls a day in the spring from people who wanted us to come out and meet with them about their landscape. When they were told about the $45 consultation fee, 2/3 of them would not continue. That left 10 calls a day to pursue. Those consultations would last about an hour. We often did quick sketches on site with graph paper and Prismacolor, but you could not keep them or copy them. Then we would go back to the office and write up contracts to either do a simple install or for design. That can take considerable time. While this is going on, we were also doing design work for those who hired us for that, and were were managing the jobs that were being built at the same time. When you consider how long it takes to construct a landscape, usually weeks, it should be clear that there is no possibility of constructing all of the work that is asked about. You would be faced with ways of filtering down the amount of work you do at every stage until it is managable at each of those stages. If not, you'd be faced with having three years of work booked in March. How professional is taking work on that you can not do for three years? That was definitely an extreme case, but that system was perfect for them. I worked for, and continue to do some work for, a very high end company that six to seven digit landscapes. The jobs are big and take months to complete. They do not do a lot of jobs each year because they are large, tightly managed, and involved. They don't advertise in a big way, so the numbers of inquiries are low and generally from sources consistant with the market in which they work. In other words the leads are usually of high quality and there are not many of them. There is no charge to meet with clients, although they are generally extremely wealthy. That works just right for that company. But, if you call from an area inconsistant with the type of work that they do, you will be subtly told to go somewhere else because they value those 5 hours of invested time managing the jobs they have and don't really want to take the work crews off of those higher production jobs to do a less productive job if they were to get it. Again, I don't see why someone can not take the time to do a mass email response to people once a week, or to put a staff member aside a time to return calls. However, you can imagine that each person calling wants to make a case for their job or wants some advice. It is rather difficult to make one of these conversations short without seeming rude. Then you have to do it over and over for each. I think I can empathise with those who will blow some of these off, if they are in big numbers. These are just some reasons why some charge for consults and others do not. Everyone's circumstance is different and it is not all about trying to milk as much money as possible. It is actually a way to manage the office's time by affecting the source of the work instead of the production end of it.

Hi. You won't find info about Aarons bulbs and Ty Ty Gardens which is one in the same on Dave's Garden Watch dog anymore. They have about 20 more plant business names, so watch out. Dave's Garden Watch dog, lets you post reviews about your experience with garden nurseries. At one time they had reviews posted about the two above nurseries, into the several hundreds, most all of it bad. I spent two whole hours reading them one night on Dave's Garden watchdog. Some of the posts were kind of semi hilarious about people ordering supposedly full trees for a relatives Birthday and getting a stick in a green bag sent to them. Then the person who ordered a supposedly full, already bearing dwarf lemon tree, and shopped for hours for just the right cobalt blue planter she had envisioned it being planted in. Only to get a bare stick sent to her too. She said she now has a stick growing in the prettiest planter you'd ever want to see. Others were actually very sad. Like the lady who thought she and her husband were fulfilling their dream of having an apple orchard on their new land they had saved to buy. Saved up for the money to buy the trees too. They ordered a couple hundred "supposedly" already bearing little apple trees(as per the advertisement, photos and description, etc, Ty Ty gardens had online.) She and her husband paid in advance and rented a huge trailer to pull behind their pickup truck to go pick them up. About a 100 mile trip. Only to be shocked and speechless when they got there, to be handed two pails with about 200 bare, 3' tall sticks in them. That fit in the back seat of their pickup. The woman said she cried all the way home and her husband just sat stony faced as they drove home. I think I'd be saying. I wanted my money back or someone was getting knuckle sandwich. There would be no pulling out of the nursery and driving home. They'd have to call the police to have my husband removed from the premises. Needless to say, for some reason they accepted them and planted them, only to have all but a few dozen die on them . They lost a big chunk of money and had no more $$ left to buy more trees to replace the ones they had lost. The guy who owned Ty Ty's nursery and Aarons bulbs supposedly knew it was hurting his business, for all these people to be posting about the horrendous rip offs on Dave's Garden as a lot of people check out garden watch dog before buying. I heard he threatened Dave's Garden with a lawsuit if he didn't remove the bad feedback. So, they did. Too bad, because they're still ripping people off from what I hear. Some people posted about when they called the company to complain, they were hung up on and some even cursed at. You just have to be careful that the nursery you're thinking of buying from, isn't affiliated with them.

Cannot speak to the code that might or might not apply in that jurisdiction. Check valves not required in my area. The check valves in the supply are not a bad idea. They prevent water from the sink or faucet being drawn back into the supply piping if the supply piping should experience a negative pressure. An episode of the TV series Quincy, M.E. with Jack Klugman featured this problem. The problem is called "cross contamination". I think the episode is Season 5, episode 21 "Deadly Arena". Suppose that the restaurant is located on a hill. Someone hooks a hose to the spout on the faucet to wash vegetables in the sink. Some dirty water is standing in the sink. The open hose end is in that standing water. A large fire breaks out nearby at a lower elevation. The hydrants are used such that the water pressure up the hill at the restaurant becomes lower than atmospheric ( vacuum). Dirty water could be drawn into the supply system from the sink. Plumbing is two distinct systems which are NEVER interconnected. One is SUPPLY, the other is DWV. Faucet spouts (by code) never extend down below the flood rim level of sinks and tubs so that an air gap always exists between the two to prevent cross contamination.
