My Ficus Lyrata needs help!

Hello everyone,

I AM DESPERATE. My partner bought me this Fiddle Leaf Fig for our three year anniversary about a month ago. I am in love with it and I think that led me to being a little too over nurturing and overwatered it. I think (pretty sure) it has root rot. I've read that I should not water it for weeks until the root ball has dried up, but I've also read that I should completely remove its roots from the soil and repot into well draining soil.

I did end up removing it from the pot and letting it sit out for several days now. But its leaves are dropping so much and the top of the stem is starting to wilt, it is really worrying me. I put my finger and the soil and it went moist but not wet. I loosened some of the soil around the root ball to allow the roots to have more access to oxygen/soil to dry out quicker, then put it back in the empty pot for some stability so it wouldn't just fall over.

I'm really nervous to do anything but I want/need to do something.

I would really appreciate any advice on what to do! Thank you!
