    Anja,

My Cheeky is blooming now too and looks just like yours, very disappointing for sure compared to last year!!

    This was last year...

    and this year!!!

The bulb itself if doing fine, 3 flowers on the first scape and another scape half way up to blooming.

Our weather hasn't been such that I can put my plants out yet; a sunny warm day interspersed with cold cloudy days or rain. I guess this particular variety is particularly sun sensitive!!

    Maria,

My 1623s from last year were somewhere in between yours and Anja's. Maybe I'll get a chance to put them out as there is still no sign of any scapes on either of them.

This is my Cheeky this year. Now I have to bring those in bud indoors as the earwigs are out and very hungry for flowers! The struggle of a Hippeastrum collector in the north! Sighhh...

Donna, I don't know what Cheeky needs to look like yours last year. It must be more than sunlight because my bulb was outside when the bud was growing and we have a very sunny spring this year with warm days and cool nights...

    Hi Anja,

I don't either!! Last year my bulb didn't receive any sun if any for me before it bloomed straight from the order and I was thrilled when it looked like it did!! Now, I'm not so thrilled at all!

The bulb itself is a good sturdy grower but what a disappointment with the flowers!

Obviously, this one isn't stable and runs the gamut as to the coloration of the flower! A little variation is fine but mine this year is rather generic looking. I have a second bud on this same bulb so we'll see that this one looks like!!

Blooming now in this rainy and cloudy day. Middle one is Night Gate. Didn’t expect it to flower for me as I bought this bulb a few years ago and it only bloomed now.

  • dondeldux z6b South Shore Massachusetts
    5 years ago

Wow! You sure are having good luck down there!!! As for Night Gate, it's pretty and looks like it might be a sibling of Salmon Taenia, do you think? The few pictures of Night Gate that I've seen just have 2 flowers; yours too?

    Evergreen are gorgeous!!

Yes only 2 flowers Donna and I do see a similarity with Salmon Teana only this one has darker bronzy color plus the petals have a shimmer in them. Evergreens are my old ones that rebloomed. Bottom white with pink picotee is a “non Thai Thai” that only bloomed now with 2 scapes. Cloudy day quite hard to take good pics.

Here is Komoriya's picture of it.

    Madame Butterfly today

  • dondeldux z6b South Shore Massachusetts
    5 years ago

    Ooh la la!!!!

No blooms on mine this year. Last year it had a bud that didn't quite make it out of the bulb although one flower did manage to bloom and the part of the bud that remained in the bulb rotted. I scooped out as much as I could and the bulb is mending but it will be a while before I see one of these gorgeous flowers in person again!!

I repotted it last year in an 8 inch pot and fertilized well. Madame liked that. I think it grew like 3 feet long leaves last year. Then I stored it in garage with papilios. It shed some leaves and kept some. I bet it would be a big plant if planted in the ground. Perhaps that's one reason why they stopped it's production? They can't afford to grow huge plants in the production greenhouses as they cost $.

Ooh I envy you being able to grow lilies!! We can grow them but the deer and rabbits eat them, especially the rabbits!! We have a fenced in area for my hydrangeas to keep the deer out and I was thinking of planting some in there but the rabbits could still get in and feast!

My Madame went out yesterday, I'm slowly bringing my plants outside; I should be done by the end of Memorial Day weekend. The pots are all clay and some are really heavy.

Thanks everyone! I love it that they also enjoy my flowers. First thing they do when they visit me is go out in my garden. Summer who grows her own amaryllis now immediately noticed Madame Butterfly and said..."Wow Yoya! Is this an amaryllis? It's so big and beautiful!" Madame almost got smacked by that little one by the way. LOL

    Mislabeled Komoriya purchased as Beyond.

  • berkeleysgr8

I tried a search for Beyond, but I couldn't find a photo. I assume Komoriya is good about replacing bulbs? They cost a small fortune, so I assume they understand that the collectors who choose their bulbs are looking for something extra special.

Rose Twist and a no name cybister hybrid.

  • dondeldux z6b South Shore Massachusetts
    5 years ago

Just gorgeous!! Is Rose Twist the lighter one? How many flowers?

There are some hungry bidders for Komoriya bulbs once again, I can't believe the prices that September Rose Line goes for these days, and to think I had one and it got lifted from one of my barrels!!! Never bloomed for me though.....I just hope that a 2 legged animal has it and it didn't get eaten by a 4 legged one!!

  • mariava7
    Original Author

Yes Rose Twist is one in the right and it only has 2 flowers...as usual.

I don't care much for Komoriya hybrids now most specially if the prices go way up there. With so many available now, they all start to look the same to me! I ain't paying $100 for a Komoriya bulb that has a similar looking one for less than $10.

Well, I thought it was, what else could it be?

I had another pale colorless scape of Cheeky. The bulb is still hard and fat but the color is gone; maybe next year!

Yes, I would say #163 too, just your strong colored outdoor version :-) It looks so different from my pale one that it is hard to believe that they are the same cultivar! Mine was the first to bloom from all the Sonatinis although I had it in a cool place so I will never see one like yours I think. Luckily I like the pale version too.

    I love your Gilmar feather!

Yes you ladies are right. Last year, this one bloomed with more pale flowers. Here’s Cool Lutz reblooming for me. This one has small roundish bulb so it is possible that it has evansiae in it’s genes.

Oooohh, this is beautiful! I crossed Machala with pollen of evansiarum this season and I would be happy if I get anything like this :-)

    Hi Maria,

I love your beautiful blooms and now I'm seriously rethinking of inviting some NBF's to some of my hippies...lol

You know??? I feel the same way towards Komoriya and it's a shame, cuz they had some real pretty hippies. I hate to and I ain't getting into a bidding war...it just makes me crazy and believe me I don't need any help in that department.

Xiangshan is simply stunning!! As you point out, I've never seen such crisp white lines in such a vibrant red!! With striped leaves and 4 flowers what more could anyone ask for!!

The second flower is amazing also with the deep red with those striations adding to the texture of the petals.. I love them both!! Your hybridizing friend is very talented!!

Thanks again for sharing them with us!
