which way to swing french doors and screens??

I've got a pair of windows just itching to be french doors and I've got some basic questions about them:
which way should they swing, in or out? we don't have a coding requirement on these so it's just preference. They will lead out to a side yard that is pretty sheltered from wind and snow build-up. What is your personal preference? and why?
Also, I imagine these doors being open all summer- How do I keep the bugs out? any particular sliding screens you'd like to recommend OR are sliding screens super annoying and there is a better option?
Are french doors insulated enough? Will I be colder all winter? Are they secure? What should I be considering during the planning/saving stage of this project?
thanks for your input!
