For pete's sake. Your contract says paint doors & trim. He did not qualify for any exclusions and even replaced the exterior door. What, he had planned on leaving it unpainted? Of course that makes no sense whatsoever. $20,000? You are a good paying customer. That he has rework is his fault, not yours. That is a heck of a lot of money for him to be getting stingy with you, especially if, as others are saying, it is no big deal. It is a big deal for a customer to have to paint a door or finish a job they have paid someone else to do. I see no reason to feel sorry for him.

Like the pergola over the garage door idea. If built to be sturdy enough to walk on it, then it could serve as a fire escape route should the need ever arise -- certainly hope it never does. You might also consider painting your step rails and side supports the same color as your siding unless you're planning to have a wood finish door and/or a rustic porch and post addition over the entry at a later date, in which case you'd want those additions to have the same wood finish. Dollars to donuts you can't paint any of the "window" frame that dark. You need to check the warranty for color specifications - usually states no colors with an LRV less than 55. So, that might help you decide what to do rather quickly. Same with the door. Going from white to the color you're considering is dramatic. It's usually based on price. Cheaper doors have a smaller range of color options, more expensive usually can be painted a broader light to dark range.

Since she posted her pictures here, I brought over her other info so we could have it all together: Here's what Leanne wrote in the other post (a little more info than above): We have recently changed out the cabinet hardware, vanity lights, counters, and flooring in our ensuite. We will eventually paint the walls and replace the builder grade mirror with round mirrors over the sinks. I would like to paint the cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and facings since the original tan colour now looks rather dated. What colour would you choose? =)
