Do you not have a lot of noise with no rugs?

Rugs + seniors = falls

I have no rugs except a 5x7 in the living room which is off limits to the dogs. All else is hardwoods, and there is enough furniture and drapes that I don't notice noise. And yes, I think rooms look bigger and cleaner.

i never could understand he logic of having hardwood floors only to cover them up with rugs.

We just pulled some of our W/W carpeting which had 50+ year old hardwood floors under. Yes, it is louder, harder on bare feet too. But the floors are beautiful, so we'll re-carpet some rooms, do hardwood in other rooms.

I have to have rugs. Downstairs neighbors.

I have hardwood floors and oriental rugs. I still can see the floors (did leave the DR bare as I didn't like the rug and it makes the small room look larger), but bare floors can be cold in the winter.

Lucille, look into a sea grass rug - much better wearing and easier to clean than jute.

Terilyn I am severely hearing impaired so noise will not be an issue. There is wall-to-wall in the bedroom (I live in an apt) plus a small rug in there, which is fine, but so far I am liking the bare look in the living/dining area. Thank you Anglophilia for the seagrass recommendation, if I ever change my mind I'll look into one.

We have not noticed an increase in noise at all.

All hardwood in our one-floor house. Large, low-pile, 'modern Orientals' (with padding) throughout. No one has ever tripped on these heavy wool rugs, and they go out to be *washed* -- clean clear through, unlike carpteing.

Found a rug I liked on Amazon, a flat weave 80%wool 20% cotton. Wool is not always easy to clean, but it's got to be easier than jute. There is a Koblenz brand shampoo where you spray a very small amount onto the rug, lightly brush it in, and then vacuum 5 hours later. Don't know whether it will work but I bought the shampoo.

Our livingroom is fully carpeted but low pile, so easy to clean. Even cat-yak comes up clean.

Our previous apartment was renovated with laminate flooring. I actually hated it. Every single grain of kitty litter showed, dust, dust-bunnies showed. I would mop it and the next day or sooner, looked like I hadn't done a thing.

It was also noisy. I could hear every sound from the apartment below, with no sound cushioning. They did put some kind of a sound pad under the flooring, but it didn't do anything as far as we could tell. Living with that, cemented our feeling that we'd never get hardwood/laminate in a home.

We have one rug. It defines the space, but is a pain too. Dh vacuums it. I trip over it.

We have have some other woolen rugs. I hesitate to use them because of cleaning issues.

I removed our carpet 12 years ago and put in an area rug. I got rid of the area rug about 8 years ago. The hardwood is so much easier to keep clean and my living room appears bigger.

I have a big rug in our den, where we are most of the time, for my dog. She loves to get on it and roll around and stretch and do her dog yoga lol. I think I will take up the rug in the formal living room though I think it looks better. The hard wood floor is so pretty in this house.

I don't have wall to wall carpet but do have area rugs. I think they add a coziness and are worth the extra effort.

Nothing wears and cleans as well as a hand knotted wool rug. Wool can be *washed* clear through. It spot cleans well -- use very little 'suds'; rinse thoroughly; dry flat. I don't use spray-on/vacuum-up cleaners; they leave residue that attracts more dirt.
