need to select wood type for stair banister -
Comments (3)As much as i too tire of oak. if you are going stain grade with floor and newels?, id say stick with oak.....I agree w klem paint grade id stick with select pine/poplar. Oak makes a very stout and solid newel connection vs chooing a softer wood for a tighter grain and a possible odd look. IMHO....See MoreStair inspiration - How to match a banister?
Comments (4)Sorry for the confusion. Let's see if I can clear it all up. We are planning to replace all of our floors, and also put hardwood on the staircase, and maybe replace the bannister depending on the cost considerations. The modern picture in the post contains the same flooring hardwood color as our new floors. We were also initially planning to match our stairs and the staircase/bannister to the light hardwood flooring. Upon seeing the modern pic above, we are now desperate to achieve the same look of matching the hardwood flooring with the walnut(?) stairs and also add the distinct accented walnut bull nosing. Upon further investigation, we discovered that Tempered Glass railings are prohibitively expensive in our area. So, we were hoping to use the same walnut stain on the stairs as depicted in the modern picture above, and somehow attempt to match wooden bannisters and spindles to those floors. I was hoping you could advise as to what kind of bannister and wooden/metal spindles would work best with the walnut stairs, and light hardwood flooring. I am also entirely terrible with colors. Are the stairs in the picture look walnut color? Worth nothing, we are aiming for a modern, minimalistic/clean, mid-century look throughout the rest of the house. On the staircase you see in the "current house" picture, I was hoping to get rid of the swirl at the end of the railing. Thanks in advance!...See Morestain for stair dilemma
Comments (7)Sorry but the answer will NOT come until AFTER a year or so with the B. cherry installed. And here's why. Brazilian Cherry has two DISTINCT colour ranges: Fiery orange/brown/flame red or it turns a fantastic PURPLE/PINK/reddish-purple. I kid you not. Google "purple pink" Brazilian Cherry and you will find HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of photos on the internet of this colour! Yep. It has TWO colour ranges. And you will NOT KNOW which colour you are going to get until AFTER it is installed! Fun isn't it? This is why Brazilian Cherry is a double-whammy when choosing it as your flooring colour - like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get (Thanks Forrest Gump!). So the problem magnifies if you pick a dark orange/brown for the treads only to have the PURPLE show up in the B. cherry! Yikes!!!!!!! You can LEAVE the stairs unfinished (throw down a cheap runner for a year or so) and wait and see what your Brazilian Cherry turns....or you can stain the treads a near black (stay away from green based stains) and paint the risers white. Or you can pay the piper and get matching Brazilian treads and be done with it. Matching the B. cherry later on won't work either. You won't know if you have the same colour range until after the treads change. And again you could end up with either the pink/purple variant or the orange/brown variant. It is 50:50 and no one can predict which one you get....See MoreStair spindles and banister clash with my dining room
Comments (6)Looks great too! As a minimum I would paint the spindles (balusters). But this is not a simple project. Very time consuming to do the proper prep, etc. You look like you have less to do than bell-above, but non-the less, a very big undertaking....See MoreJohnson Flooring Co Inc
