winterizing ponds up here in the north
Comments (3)Will I wish I had some advice for you, for winterizing your pond in respect to keeping it partially open. We shut the entire pond down, unhook the pump, biofilter, etc. We bring in our Koi for the winter and keep them in a 100 gal stock tank in the basement. John has a filter system, chiller to chill water to around 51 degrees (low temp keeps them less active), bubblers, etc. Since they are still somewhat active at 51 degrees, they get fed cherrios twice a week. This will be about the 6th winter they've wintered this way. Hopefully someone else that has a pond and keeps it partially open will chime in and give some pointers. Comments (1)I saw your post in another forum. I expect the Virginia creeper would fit the bill, although I think it ideciduous. Boston ivy is also deciduous but has nice fall coloration. English ivy is evergreen. Someone in the other forum had mentioned climbing hydrangea, but that one seems to be too nice a plant to have grow up that high only to be ripped down. Another possibility is winter creeper. How long it takes to cover depends on how much surface area there is, how healthy the vine(s) is(are), and how moist the stucco tends to get as the vine's rootlets draw moisture from it....See MoreGround Cover For a Large North Facing Slope
Comments (9)I am not sure about the evergreen part but I did notice in my garden it did remain to stay green all year. Wild Blue Phlox, Phlox divaricata it blooms in the spring a pretty blue, very fragrant. Phlox also reseeds it self so it should spread quite nicely. Here in my area its a wonderful site to see the phlox growing in the wild on slopes and hills amongst the rocks and trees. Its height is about a foot tall so its not your typical ground cover but I know from what I have seen its a beautiful thing for hillsides when its in bloom. Yes, there were several that touched down apparently. And lots of hail. I heard a major car dealer in Cullman lost almost every car due to hail damage. I’ll see if I can find one of the photos, but the hail was huge. Looked like a flat baseball.
