Need advise on reviving lawn
Comments (2)what's your climate like down there right now? you could probably plan some perennial ryegrass to get you by while you plan out a bermuda sprig or seed. riviera is a relatively new variety of bermuda that establishes from seed. otherwise, you're best best is to get some sprigs and try to re-establish a decent variety of bermuda. common bermuda, which you lawn may well be is considered a weed by many nowadays. you don't have to remove the dead weeds, but it might help to till them in a little with a rake or something prior to seeding. one thing i often tell people is to stay away from the fertilizer + ________ products, most of the time they are a marketing gimmick. if you can keep a healthy, thick lawn, you don't need any of that stuff. but it sounds like you got decent results from the weed n' feed, so if it works, keep at it. bottom line, get some sprigs, keep em fertilized and the bermuda SHOULD outcompete the weeds if they don't have too much of a stronghold. otherwise, you might want to consider calling in a professional to sod your lawn....See MoreQuestion on newly seeded lawn and killing weeds
Comments (6)There are ALOT of weed killers on the market that don't include fertilizers. Trimec Plus is one I've used with good results down here on broadleaf weeds in my yard. The first step is to identify what the weeds are exactly that you want to kill & then go from there. The big box stores (HD & Lowes) have hose end spray kits for weeds but I've never really liked to use those. Do some searching on the internet for other places that carry more of a variety of lawn control products....Good luck....See MoreLawn Refurb Part II
Comments (21)Hmm. For your new lawn, the seed contains everything that the new grass plants require for the first few weeks of life. Between that and your starter fertilizer, you're set. The recommendation after that seems to be a half-strength dose in about six weeks--that would be October 15. After that, you'd normally wait until growth stops and then winterize. This year, determining the growth stop might be a little difficult since it'll be spending more time on root systems anyway. More arbitrarily, around Thanksgiving give it a shot of winterizer. If your ground usually freezes before then, do it at least two weeks before ground freeze up. Next year, don't feed until mid to late May. The winterizer will see it through the early season and you don't want to encourage top growth when it should be setting up deeper root systems. Mushrooms...maybe I could send mine over so they can all make friends. I sure get enough! Most are harmless and you don't need to worry about them unless they're in a fairy ring. Kick over the fruiting bodies if you want. Proper fertilization can help, as mushrooms like high-carbon food. Adding the N means the bacteria have a source to tap and use to grow. Warranted, that works a lot better with organic feedings....See Morehelp me identify these weeds/trees/flowers - Part II
Comments (24)The picture that says "are they phlox or something else?" looks a lot like Physostegia / Obedient plant to me. whoever buys my place will probably scalp the entire 26 garden beds i have nurtured for the past 12 years and put in hardscape or a pool. breaks my heart, but nothing i can do about it Roxanna, there are things you can do before you leave your gardens - you can open your gardens to gardening friends or neighbors for give-aways, donate plants to a local or charity plant sale, sell or give away on Craigslist or Freecycle. People will even come and dig stuff up for you. Better than those lovely plants being scalped!...See MoreDustin
