Need Help with CA Bungalow
I am renting a very cute, and very old, Northern CA bungalow. My ability to change not much more than paint leaves me in a real design dilemma. I really like a lot of different looks: craftsman, farmhouse, traditional and transitional. I have some furniture but I really have accepted that I need new stuff. My budget isn’t huge, but I’m willing to make a few investments and add over the next year. Thoughts?

6 years agoThank you for your feedback! I tried switching the couch and chair but because of the break in the wall, the couch is too big for the corner. I would have really preferred the chair in the window too!! The media area is small, so I’m still looking for a new stand. I’m thinking a bit more industrial with the brick...

Comments (5)One thing about shrubs, particularly cedars, planted next to a house, is they hold moisture/snow up against the house, not good. If you're going with a cedar, plant it well away from the house and make sure you leave enough room for its eventual growth and still room to step behind it. There are many cultivars of cedar, some get huge and some stay small. Make sure you find one that won't eventually dwarf your house. No to landscape fabric. Yes to mulch to keep down weeds. Comments (2)Leaf tip browning on potted palms is usually an indicator of over-watering and, in this case, might also be partly due to some light transplant shock. That said, yours doesn't look sad or unhealthy. The next time you go to water your palm, stick your index finger down into the soil up to the knuckle (~2 inches). If it is completely dry, water it. Comments (15)What a darling house! I'd play around with the color blocking and not assume the siding and garage door have to match. Maybe paint the garage door to match the brick, as in @celerygirl mock-up, and then decide what to do with the siding. A new front door and light, and maybe new more vertical railings. 6 years agopink_peony makes a good point about re-upholstering furniture. It's rarely economical unless you have a high quality piece of furniture.
At this point, I think your focus in the living room should be pricing appropriately sized sofas. You'll find that a sofa will serve you much better over the years, than a sectional. Buy the absolute best you can afford in a classic shape and color you know you won't tire of.
Your bedding looks good. Consider folding back the duvet for a more layered look. You will need a more substantial bed side lamp. There are many affordable options at your local discount or consignment stores. Maybe deepen the restful tones of your palette in an art piece for above the bed.
I like to consider my sight lines upon entering a room. I find that being presented with electronics, such as TV's, doesn't feel welcoming. The recommendations above may be your best option. But, I'd like you to consider the below once you have an appropriately sized sofa.
