Small bathroom door options - French door? Barn door?
Comments (19)Elphaba, I'm in Houston. We have completely gutted our "new" house and are in the process of rebuilding. Throughout the house, we have installed pockets for 4 pocket doors. One of those is in the master bath. I am really excited to be getting those doors out of the way. I can share my experience. We have 3 pocket doors in our office here, and we have not had any problems. The office is on a slab, and the thermostat is only kept at a comfortable level 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. This means that it gets fairly humid in there on the weekends. The office pocket doors are rarely used, but when I do use them, they work just fine. They were installed about 3 years ago without any problems. It's true that it is humid outside, but I wouldn't think with central air that it would be any more humid than anyplace else on the inside of your house. Of course a bathroom is more humid than other rooms, but if your cabinet hardware isn't sticking or rusting, I would think that the pocket door would behave in the same way. At least that's what I'm hoping since we just installed 4!!! My vote is for the pocket door. Best of luck with your project! Enduring, that's great info on the pocket doors. Thank you for sharing. Comments (9)My master (HAH...tiny, tiny) bathroom door currently opens in. Although it does not block access to anything as it opens against a wall, I am planning to change it so that it will open into the bedroom instead. My reasoning is that I am attempting to make the bathroom less claustrophobic and am going to install a window on the wall that the door would block when open. I have built a ceiling to floor, wall length closet in the bedroom and the door will open into the end space of that closet so that it will look more like a hallway into the bathroom, not just a door opening into the bedroom space. Make sense? I gave up coffee recently....just not fair. I love the look of the interior barn doors, however in my case it would take up most of the only wall I have in the bathroom...although I suppose one could put towel bars on it...I may have to rethink this......See MoreA 2 way lock for a sliding barn door?
Comments (9)I think a hook and eye is your “best” option here if you are going to keep the barn door. I am with @Sophie Wheeler in that barn doors are a terrible idea functionally. They look great on baths in showhomes and design blogs, but they are terrible for noise and light reduction and well, as seen cause issues if you actually want to lock it. A friend of mine bought a new build with a reclaimed wood barn door on master bath and soon switched out for a real door: middle of the night pee breaks or early risers meant a light flashing in rest of master or the rolling noise of a door or the noise of someone getting ready while other was still sleeping: more commonly all of those at once....See Moredoor to back patio in master bath
Comments (10)When I was 21 I lived by myself. One night I was inside my home, in bed asleep when I heard noises at my front door. I walked out of the bedroom and could tell someone was screwing around with my front door knob. I had no other egress door. I called 911, grabbed my .30-06, turned on the lights and positioned myself in a corner with the gun pointed at the door. The lights didn't deter the invader. They didn't care that I was home or wanted me to be at home. They took off when they saw the lights of the police car pull up to the front of my house. When the officer came to the door it popped open and the officer saw me still hunkered in the corner. The guy breaking in had jimmied the lock and was seconds from being inside my home. As you may guess, my vote would be to keep the door....See Moremary
