Has anyone bought from Builders Depot Direct.com?
Comments (42)My experience: The Builder Depot can work out great if you're willing to put in a lot of time and buy a lot of extra tile (knowing it's still a good price compared to other options). There WERE significant variations in size of the 3x6 venato tiles we got (1/8" difference), and there were a lot of tiles that were yellow/brownish or otherwise not great. However, I would do it again, with a plan to 1. measure every single tile, or at the very least measure several tiles from each box and stack them to make sure there are no big/small ones, and 2. lay out the tile from all of the boxes, pick out the ones you don't like, and MIX them so the installer isn't using tile from one box at a time. It will take many hours, but the end result is worth it....See MoreAre Ikea cabinets really cheaper than Lowes/Home Depot?
Comments (35)Thanks all - the $4500 quote from our Contractor is including cabinets plus assembly labor for doing Ikea (I asked about this directly). This is part of a huge project that involves essentially building an addition, knocking out walls, moving plumbing and electricity, and more, etc. etc. I'm not sure how the $4500 breaks down to cabinets alone vs. labor, but I don't think he is charging much for the labor portion considering all the labor they are already doing on our house on this 5+ month project. I also think at this point reading through multiple threads that it's true we might easily spend more than that $4500 going to a Lowe's or Home Depot even if cabinets come preassembled. I got hopeful for a moment while in Lowes, but I'm now skeptical. We WILL likely cost out some options when the time comes, just to be sure in the end. It's just not at all worth the headache to us to try to DIY the assembly at that time for a number of personal reasons I won't go into....See MoreBeware -Home Depot cabinet install
Comments (9)Without knowing the size of your kitchen to be installed, it's hard to comment on the $3000 installation estimate. However, for an average kitchen, $3000 seems on point. If they are indeed RTA cabinetry, $3000 sounds really good. Paying a contractor half that may sound good, but if that contractor has no clue on proper installation practices, it can go sour very quickly. Will your contractor accept responsibility for damage and or incorrectly cut items? Just take a look at this thread to understand what can happen when an installation is in the wrong hands. It's no secret that I'm not a fan of Big-Box suppliers, but their installation crews are still worth the money if you're buying your cabinetry through them. As for delivery, that's pretty standard delivery practice as well. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like you were properly informed ahead of time. That's the fault of the HD associate for not explaining it to you. Whether you were using their installation crew or not, "curb delivery" is pretty standard and in all honestly, not much different than getting a package from UPS. Just more product being delivered at one time. It's unfortunate that your experience with your new kitchen has gone sour right from the start. Hopefully the rest of it goes better for you....See MoreHome Depot Cabinet order gone wrong
Comments (14)The issue with big box stores and Home remodels is the simple fact that all the contractors are working for the store not you. I want my contractor working for me. That way I get to say what is acceptable and what is not and I don’t need to route everything through the middle man ( the big box store ). Experience and reputations matter. Problem is one week someone may indeed get a great job from one of the big box stores. However if contract something later from a big box, , I have no idea or control over the selection of the contractor. And maybe my neighbor got a great one and a great job and I get someone not as good. If I hire my own remodeler and they did an excellent job for my neighbor I should get the same quality work....See MoreUser
