Fragrant purple roses?
Comments (20)My most fragrant purple roses, ranked from #1 to less scent: #1 is 12th-year own-root William Shakespeare 2000, smells like violets and old rose: #2 in scent in Young Lycidas, grafted-on-Dr.Huey from Regan Nursery. It's a wimpy plant. #3 in scent is 8th-year own-root Stephen Big Purple, but it died after eight zone 5a winters. #4 in scent is Purple Lodge, below pic. is taken as a 2-month old band purchased from LongAgoRoses this year. Plant is extremely vigorous but blooms are small:...See Morepurple or lavender roses
Comments (32)One that has been surprisingly prolific and healthy for me has been Pillow Talk, that I got when Cliff from Eurodesert sold his garden plants last year. Pillow Talk has happily survived my zone 5 winters and put out frequent reblooms of some nicely double mauve roses on a low growing plant. I consider this rose exactly what I think of when people say "mauve" - sort of a dusty pinkish purple that was popular in carpets in my grandparents' youth (certainly my grandmother had that color all over her house). The pictures on HMF are mostly from Beth, and mine has stayed the dusky purple with cream highlights rather than the hot pink in one photo. Only available from Vintage on HMF but we still have hopes for some form of survival from Vintage in years to come. Cynthia...See MoreSuggestion for an Outstanding Plum/Purple/Lavender Color Rose?
Comments (19)I am a west-coast rose grower and would recommend one that I grow, the floribunda "Love Potion." It fits your width restriction, has glossy, disease-resistant foliage and gives plenty of fragrant, lavender blooms. (re: real blackspot -- that shouldn't be a problem in your area, but it resists that too) I will put a link to the HelpMeFind description, and you can click on the photos tab for more pictures. Heirloom Roses does carry it and you might check with Armstrong too: Here is a link that might be useful: Love Potion...See MorePurple/lavender rose suggestions
Comments (14)I agree with Jackie's Veilchenblau suggestion. A wonderful rose! I am downsizing my (tiny) garden but adding a few favorites. Veilchenblau is one on the honored few. It's that purple and that good! I also grow Violette which would probably thrive for you, too. She's another multiflora hybrid and really deep, yummy red-purple. In your area, I would give these ramblers partial shade. They should bloom just fine. I'm big on purple gallicas here in Portland, OR, but except for CdR, which you mentioned, I think other classes perform better in OK. Baby Faurax is a nice little mauve polyantha and should do well in your climate. A personal favorite of mine is Basye's Purple, developed by Dr. Robert Basye and much loved by the Texas A&M crowd...and me! Carol...See MoreVaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley
