Review of all the mail order roses
Comments (27)I agree with the Crimson Bouquet. It's the best small sized rose bush in my garden too. I'm surprised not more people grow her. Thanks for this review and others comments as well, because I had no idea of all the places to get good roses. I should relay my experience too with the few I have ordered from. Heirloom: good healthy plants but only two have bloomed in their first year. I am assuming that's normally the case with new roses and for own root. I bought two Earth Angels and both are sending blind shoots. Red Minimo bloomed like crazy. Blue For You bloomed like crazy. Abraham Darby is too new to say. I personally like Heirloom but it is very expensive I must say. All their roses have sent basals from the roots so I am happy. J&P: I recieved one band of Ballerina that hasn't bloomed and I don't expect it to till a few years but is doing great! I got two bareroot roses that are doing fine as well. One is Heirloom which was free and is doing exceptionally well and Spice it Up which is taking a little long to establish. I will say I have some pest eating the buds before they can form properly and that may have been the problem with the two EAs as well not blooming yet. High Country Roses: I got a Paul Neyron where the top growth looked amazing and there was an ok amount of root mass. It didn't fall apart when I transplanted it so I am waiting to see how it does. Rogue Valley Roses: I got three bands from them and while the root mass on all of them was massive the stems look a very sickly yellow and one stem on one plant of the two is maroon with some white stuff on it. Still waiting for them to look better. They are starting some signs of new growth as the bud eyes are starting to swell. Hopefully they will be ok. I got a Dakota Redwing, Yves Piaget, and Bouquet Parfait. I needed a couple shade tolerant roses. Yves is the only one going in a pot in the front. That's only if it starts growing more before the fall cutoff planting time too. I need to try Palatine this fall if they get the roses I want back in stock. Also K&m sounds good too. I did preorder from David Austin for next year and it was my first time. I hope it won't be a disappointment. The only thing that is a bit confusing to me personally is the nurseries that just have a list of roses with no real way to know which are currently in stock. There is no online cart. How do you order? Call or email? Sorry nooby here!...See MoreYour recent experiences with Hortico?
Comments (80)Thanks Cindi for the info. I have 2 Nahema on Hortico waiting list along with 6-8 other roses for next year. I didn't know they had it all these time. When I placed my 1st order, there was none. I will wait for next year since it's getting late for rare boot roses. Good luck with yours. I got a Nehema from Ludwigs 5-6 weeks ago. I think my zone 6a garden is too cold for it after hearing one of my friends in NC zone 7 lost hers this spring, I am growing mine in a pot now. Good luck with your Nahema, it's a beautiful rose indeed. :-)...See MoreI love Leonardo da Vinci
Comments (44)I agree with Lilyfinch, Ben, that looks like Leo. Those big, glossy, deep green leaves give it away as much as the blooms which are very full and you can see the eye clearly in the center. It'a a great looking bush even when it's not in bloom. Mine takes a rest between cycles. It's not in bloom continually for me but might be in a warmer climate. It maintains it's neat and tidy shape. No wayward canes, no drooping to one side or developing bare spots. Even the blooms are uniform in their shape and size. I don't know if it's a negative or just a characteristic, but the petal tips can get lighter as the blooms age. Maybe it's the full sun, or something that can be controlled....See MoreMy Personal Aust-Insanity!
Comments (14)My Mom got the first DA rose, Golden Celebration, the year it came out, 92, I think and it is still here. Later I got Graham Thomas as a mislabel. About 5 years ago I thought I'd try something pink so I got Queen of Sweden and Jubilee Celebration. I'm not real impressed with any of them. GC can be gorgeous when it's in its spring flush and it does smell divine but so far the rest aren't anything to write home about. Also, they are all water hogs and spot magnets for me! Having been an exhibitor I guess I just prefer the HT form better myself. I have no trouble wintering any of them really but I'm a full zone warmer than you, Steven. Madison, Dr. Huey and Multiflora are the preferred root stocks for cold zones. Dr. Huey was almost exclusive for decades until the Canadians started using Multiflora with good results. Now almost all the roses from the Canadian mail order nurseries are on Multiflora. The only root stock I wouldn't recommend is Fortuniana. It is marvelous in warm climates and really pushes big, fast growth but it has a habit of rooting very shallow so it is very freeze tender. I know a few people who have managed to get it to survive but it takes a lot of effort and protection....See MoreSheila z8a Rogue Valley OR
