Suggestions for more counter space (peninsula, base cabinet, etc)
Comments (14)Thanks everyone for your feedback. To answer some questions, I'm afraid the item posted by remodelfla is very cool, but way to big for the situation, plus I don't see how having the counter move in and out is that big of a help because you still have to stash the chairs somewhere. For those interested, here is the actual link to that product: http://www.wolffurniture.com/Item.aspx?ItemID=-1994755930&ItemNum=4024-505%2b2x591. For morgne's question, the only thing I am changing is the 3 ft wall where we removed the pipe, the rest of the cabinets are staying put.(though I know they are not perfect, but I'm not doing a complete kitchen makeover.)...See MoreAdding Counter Space
Comments (4)Ditto lazygardens suggestions. I would add upper and lower cabinets on the powder room wall, extend the base cabinets to hook to the side of the kitchen cabinet on the left side of the sink and wrap the counter around. Depending upon the formality of your diningroom, you might put a nice painted wood cart with a waterlox wood top, just around the corner in the diningroom where it could be used in either the kitchen or DR. That would combine both of her suggestions....See MoreInstall base cabinets away from wall, to gain counter space?
Comments (20)As I type this, the contractors are downstairs framing the north wall of our galley layout so that the counters will be 4" deeper. They will be 2" taller on both sides. We are doing what Co-Co has done -- which I am glad to see, because a couple of the contractors we interviewed thought it was just too weird. Our kitchen is 10' wide -- just wide enough that you'd almost want an island but there's really no room for it. Making the counters the same depth as the refrigerator also allows us to repair the walls from the previous remodel where they'd cut out several studs to run plumbing....See MoreWhich is more valuable? A larger sink or more counter space?
Comments (44)I really wish it was possible to really test drive a workstation sink. We’re intrigued by the idea but definitely need to fit two people working in the kitchen at the same time (I’m the family ‘chef’ but my SO frequently helps out prepping and cleaning as I go, and often we prep more than one meal at a time, so there’s a lot going on in the kitchen at once.) They’re expensive enough - especially for the larger ones since then you need a custom sink cabinet, etc. - that we don’t want to commit unless we are sure it will help. We’re not rolling in money but we’re realistic about the issues caused by my health problems - sometimes we are just going to have to go for something more expensive because the functionality is worth it. (We do use cutting boards now. My big thought is how well a surface in a workstation sink would work for baking type activities, and where I could do those things - rolling out dough mostly - if the sink didn’t work for it, which seems likely. There are possibilities, I just need to think them through.)...See MoreJayDee May
