I think it depends on the decoration that you currently have, i dont think they go with every decor, and now i am starting to think that maybe they belong more in the patio. Although i had a Papasan chair and it was soooo comfy, my husband misses it a lot. Pier 1 imports have some really good ones. We got it there.

They scream "college dorm room" to me. They can work in some spaces, but usually no.

We had one in my daughter’s room, then moved it to the guest room (she liked to use that room as a reading room). It wasn’t comfortable unless you stayed curled up. But for regular sitting, no. Not comfortable, and hard to get in and out of. Also, the top part and cushion would move around too much on the base, which was annoying. I sold it a few months ago before we moved.

It was great for her as a kid, but for adult sitting, not so much.

I actually won a papasan chair when a new Pier One opened down the street - it was a grand opening giveaway!! It was immensely comfortable and my DH and I would fight over who got to sit in it, usually piled in with a few dogs as well :-) But as we grew older and our tastes got a bit more sophisticated, it was NOT the right look for our house and we gave it to some friends for their kids' playroom.

More suited to a sunporch or weekend cabin/beach house but a living room......not so much :-(

I don't know about the double version. Try it out in the store. Rock around and see if it's stable (if you care about that) and comfortable. It probably takes more floor space than you expect. I have to give mine extra floor space so when a kid sits in it wrong and the chair topples, it won't damage anything.

They do seem to "go" better anywhere that rattan or wicker belong and are pretty casual compared to even most other rattan stuff. I don't know if papasans were ever in style. I always felt they were more of a novelty thing.

I am very fond of my papasan chair. It's the regular old-school round type with a big round cushion (I don't think the cushions pictured above would be the same!). I think they are better for people who like to curl up--it's great for napping, watching movies (if you aren't drinking), reading, etc.

The one Lindsey shows looks rather stable compared to the typical Pier One type where the top and bottom are not attached and there is only radial symmetry, with no designated top or bottom to the saucer. You just sort of position the bowl at the angle you want it. Not sure how the love seat version would work but it might lose some of its essential papasanness.

It's probably juvenile but I don't care. Why does everything have to be grown up and respectable?

i know this conversation is old but West Elm now has a line of papasan furniture which looks a lot more sophisticated and better quality than the usual ones i see. The rattan is well made with a deep walnut finish and the cushions are lovely and creamy white - they have ties that make it very practical and stylish. i love papasan chairs but shied away from them because of the dorm room, youthful associations. But this new design- they look nice and i am buying some for my sunroom!

Papasan, in southeast asia, are actually considered traditional design. they also were popular in midcentury esp with the tropical craze. So they are classic and iconic in their own way. I think its possible that the really cheap ones that have been around since the 90's have kind of ruined their reputation so to speak :)

also if you have even a slight hint of boho in your style, i think they work...

for me personally i will probably tone them down to balance the boho aspect- i think they would look great with a coastal inspired styling like serena and lily, or more modern- i might try pairing them with a mcgee and co blue and white stripe/plaid throw, and a chunky white modern side table, maybe a black modern floor lamp, something like that so it grounds the style. and a plant of course!

also in the sunroom i think i can get away with it more.... but they are so comfy and light ill probably move them around alot. they are versatile and i think would look good in a bedroom corner as well as extra movie night seating.

i think because of Covid we are all moving towards a comfort aesthetic personally.

That looks exactly like my old one. (I have a natural one, but a darker was available at the time too. This medium stain is quite nice.)

Papasan chairs are back, if you like it and it works in your space, go for it! I have fond memories of curling up in one to read as a kid.
