Comments (4)I have a flower bed that has similar exposure, but is a little smaller. I placed a statue at the shadiest end and planted arborvitae fern, white caladiuims, red dragon wing begonias and purple trailing torenia. The fern is evergreen for me and the dragon wings are root hardy, although I do have to replace the caladiums and torenia every year. I also have a small black elephant ear at the corner. When the torenias and caladiums die down, I plant snapdragons and johnny jump ups for winter color. Here is a photo of that bed, although you cannot see the fern since it is shorter than the caladiums and begonias and the photo is taken from front-to-back. The bed I am referring to is to the left side of the photo, as this section is part of an L-shaped flower bed Molly...See MoreZone 9a smelly tree with white flowers, HELP!
Comments (4)Insect pollinated plants can sometimes be allergenic, for instance the last time I was tested privet was one of the ones that I reacted to (the rest were wind pollinated kinds). I've just never heard or seen anything about photinia being allergenic before, and when allergists have decided what I was being affected by it was by testing me in a clinical setting. And not assuming it was being caused by something they could see blooming out the window. At a time of year when many other things are in bloom. Of course, if there has been an episode of handling the photinia while in flower - like pruning a hedge of it at that time - and a sneezing fit resulted then that could imply a relationship. As long as the photinia was not covered in the wind borne pollen of another plant, that was the actual culprit....See MoreHelp with large azaleas - zone 9a
Comments (4)It is normal for all plants to have the bulk of the leaves on the outside and be sparse to bare of foliage in the interior, more so with sheared shrubs. Azalea can take a very hard cut down and the best time to do it is right after they finish blooming. They will regrow when cut back to the main trunks/stems. Cut them down to a foot below what you want their finished size to be even if all that is left is a couple fat sticks. They will sprout, regrow and be green this year. Next year after bloom season you will get a full bush....See MoreMyer R.
