Dark sofa set on dark hardwood floor

Hi,

We are purchasing a new home and the floor is hard wood (attached pic). It is a dark color. We like a sofa (pic attahced) It is dark color too.

Now, a dark sofa on a dark wood, how will that go? From the articles I am reading sofa color should blend in with the wall - which is not the case here.

How can we accentuate the area so that it isn't all dark over there. Any suggestions pls?

You can have contrast with the wall colour. There's no rule that says the sofa must blend in the wall colour.

What is it you like about that sofa? It looks very stiff and uncomfortable, and not real leather. Is the room to be a Man Cave? If not, then look for a more sit-able sofa in a lighter color and in real leather or fabric. A bright rug under a sofa can help, but theirs is not large enough.

What particular style are you putting into your kitchen? A contemporary urban, country, british colonial, romantic, mission craftsman,.... or maybe an electic style of the things you love. Best rug style/color for dark hardwood floors in apartment?

Do you need to have the area rugs right away? Like, does your lease require that you have rugs over a certain percentage of the floor? If not, I'd wait to buy the rugs until you are in the apartment and have lived there for a while. See what rooms are sunny and which are darker. Develop a plan for decorating each room. Unless you are planning on decorating around whatever rug you buy, the rugs in a room should match/blend/coordinate with the other furnishings.

HI joshua123, The kitchen tile is from Pratt & Larson. It is a custom waterjet mosaic piece in marble. The color is a dark grey with a lot of variation. the exact color is bardiglio. the white boarder and interior boarded are snow white marble. kathy and Micah at pratt & lason were extremely helpful finding exactly what I wanted for our kitchen. I'll have to post a couple more pictures from a sunny day, as the ones I have posted dont really reflect the real colors. as far as style and mosaics being dated or not, I'm a firm believer that you should go with what you love and what speaks to you. you are going to be living in the house and walking into that kitchen every day. I dont think our kitchen mosaic looks dated at all, but I'm also not a designer. I can tell you it makes me happy when I walk in to make my morning coffee in that room. I did consider using more of that tile to cover the entire backspace area from the cooktop to the hood, as diana illustrated in some of her photos, to really give it a more modern look, but it was too expensive to justify in this house.

Well, the only reason we were not looking at neutral/white/beige colors is coz of the stains. We have a small kid and stains will not be avoidable. I have never had a light colored sofa so not sure how tough it to remove stains!?

Family friendly options that aren't dark:

-Microfiber has the reputation of being easy to clean.

-You could get a slipcover sofa. These are easy to find at places like Potter Barn and Crate and Barrel and don't look schlumpy like an aftermarket slipcover (although it's generally a more casual look that a regular sofa).

-You could get something with patterned upholstery that would camouflage stains a bit.

Anything but dark brown or black! There's lots of performance fabrics that are stain resistant. Lots of leather colors that aren't dark...
