Zebra plant brown dry spots on leaves

Hello,

I recently go this zebra plant and we placed on a table it in front of our window that got sun in the mid afternoon until the evening. I may get a bit of direct light but nothing scorching, especially these past weeks where we had pretty cloudy weather. I don't believed I over watered it either as I measured moisture with a digital meter.

Just today I noticed some brown dry spots on the leaves.

What can it be?

Could you possibly have under watered? I have the exact same problem happening to a rather recently purchased zebra plant, and I think I may have let it get a little too dry between waterings - (but I’m actually trying to figure out the same thing!)

Could be, although I am checking weekly-ish with a digital moisture meter how the soil is towards the bottom. I water thoroughly when it reads zero or close to it.

I read that they like high humidity. Being in California, not so much. So maybe it would require some more regular misting and taking it a bit away from the window?

Joe, the two most common diseases doing what you are seeing are septoria leaf spot and blackberry rust. My guess would be the former since it is more common. My recollection is dormant lime-sulphur is the best treatment. Lime-sulphur is organic. Since you may be past dormant season you could still spray a less potent strength I expect but look up some guidelines for treatment of the disease with Google to get the details. But, before you do anything search for pictures of various blackberry leaf diseases and figure out which one you have for certain. Then search for treatments for that. This happens to mine all the time. Brown spots or the whole leaf turning read before crinkling away. Varies highly from plant to plant. It doesn't seem to be a problem as long as some secondary leaves have had a chance to come out. Your mileage may var.

Since it is a house plant one of the things for the future of the plant is were those leaves against a cold window? What ever caused it you can not cure the leaves that are damaged. Cut the damaged leaves off and put in trash. Your plant should recover.

I've never grown fittonia, but they are humidity lovers and what I've heard, are pretty difficult to keep indoors in a non-terrarium setting. Brown tips could be a result of dry air, but also watering issues and salt build up in the soil. If it's just a few old leaves and is not showing up on the majority of the plant or on the new growth, I wouldn't worry that much. Though, like I said I've never grown fittonia so I'll let the fittonia experts chime in :)

From what I understand, the zebra plant may not want to ever have zero moisture (get completely dried out)...?

They prefer a well moistened root ball. The plant may also be pot root bound and in need or a larger pot. They have an aggressive root system that will quickly fill a pot actively growing.
