Anyone put new counter tops in?
Comments (20)Lol. This post is from 2006 and I'm still getting notifications of replies to it. We replaced our counter tops with the inexpensive Formica at Lowe's about 5 years ago now. We had a water leak at the kitchen sink which caused some damage that we wanted to fix so while we were ripping things out we decided to replace the counter tops. We did end up having to build a new face for the base of the counters as the thin paneling stuff was not the best, so my cupboards on the bottom are stronger than ever. My husbad also had to cut the piece off the back of the countertops to make them fit as mine weren't as deep as the ones from the store but with a little trim along the back of the counter and nobody knows. I love my kitchen even to this day. The money was well worth it! If I remember correctly they cost about $150? In Sept we will have lived here for 12 years!!...See Moreanyone have pics of OLD white marble counter tops?
Comments (10)lol...i totally want carerra. i would get soapstone if i could. in my last house we remodeled and i got cobra soapstone which was great. i would recommend it to anyone and everyone. our last house was in PA. now we are in florida. i am going to get a cobra sink made and shipped down here but soapstone down here would cost us too much for counters....over $100 more a sq ft than carerra. but carerra is my #2 choice and i love how it looks. but...i cook for reals and i know "patina" is my destiny. but still...i don't know if i am prepared for "the big one!" like an 8" turmeric stain or whatever. on the plus size..the cost here is about $44 a sq ft. it's beautiful. it's natural. it doesn't contain any toxic resins or formaldehyde or radon. i can live with some wabi sabi and if we sell 20 years from now and it looks like crap, i guess we will have to replace it w/new marble to get it ready for the market. who knows! i just want to see some pics ;)...See MoreNew counters on old cabinets
Comments (16)Well, that is the point. Do it to make yourself happy, not to increase the value of your home or make it sell faster, because there's no guarantee of that. But people have heard (from where?) that everyone wants granite, so they think they need to go out and get it. If I had kept my old cabinets, I would have looked at whatever worked with the style and age of my cabinets, as long as it did not require grout! My neighbor just put in a Corian look-alike and it looks great. I didn't remodel to be on trend. I needed a functioning kitchen. I cook most meals from scratch, so it's more than a kitchen, it's my workspace. Most people would say my kitchen is past trend--it's natural cherry with ORB hardware, which I think was popular about 10 years ago. The only thing we did to save it from a cliche was put on light-colored quartz countertops instead of black granite. But wood suits our house and furniture and the Pacific Northwest where we live....See MoreChanging counter tops in kitchen with white cabinets
Comments (37)I think the granite looks great: very classic and a big improvement over the tile! I'd definitely look into undercabinet lights. Before, the white counters reflected the ceiling light back up under the cabinets. The dark granite holds onto the light and makes the undercabinet areas a little cave-like. Lighting will make a big difference. I think the previous suggestions are excellent: painting the wall in the kitchen, along with finding some colorful accessories. I had a small galley kitchen similar to this one, and I was amazed at the difference a bright blue rag rug and a few blue dishtowels over the stove handle made....See Morekazmom
