Furniture Design Dilemma Fireplaces

HELP NEEDED! what would you do on each side of the fireplace?

There is a new flat screen tv on the wall right to the fireplace. I need ideas how to integrate it. Floating shelves? The stone wall is about 1 1/2 inch deep... will 3 to 6”deep shelves will look odd? In wood or all white?

We want a more modern look. But don’t even know what style to choose for the table pour pouf...

ANY IDEAS ? I

We want to repaint probably in a lighter neutral or white paint.

Actual carpet, table and curtains will be out.

There will be a new and bigger carpet and I need to find a new table or a a pouf.

Place the sofa facing the FP and a round glass and metal coffee table 18" or less from it. You need a rug at least 2 feet wider than the sofa that can sit 12-15" from the hearth and slip under the front 1/3 of the sofa. Use painter's tape to tape it out on the floor and if it isn't a standard size, go up one standard size. The two chairs look cool as art, but are extremely uncomfortable, especially for sitting through a movie on TV. If you can return them for pair of comfortable armchairs your bum will happier in the long run. If you get swivel chairs it will be even better for turning to watch TV, as I would place them either opposite the window or flanking the sofa and facing each other over the coffee table. I would put matching consoles either side of the FP. The TV gear can go in the one under it. You can set the TV on a swivel base or wall mount it on an articulated arm. Use a table lamp and some accessories on the left one.

Your furniture is configured wrong. I would put the couch facing the fireplace with the two gray chairs on either side, and then turn your coffee table the other way. Then I would hang the TV over the fireplace.

I like some your renderings on the right track with the framing ideas Palimp temp fix is lovely - again I'll echo what others have said about fireproof material within certain distances of firebox - likely 6'-12" depending on which plane. The difference with Palimps thought is the proportions and her firebox is seated closer to the floor grounding it. Emma's is a much larger wall expanse with smaller firebox & more free floating - the challenges are, making it a focal point without making it morph into the wall/design that is why I think framing it works - also, I don't know that a mantle is suited here due to the ,what appears to be high traffic area & something protruding from that height may be awkward Of all i like th 15:25 post frame in frame idea - 2nd pic I think a chunky frame right on the opening is in order to beef up the actual firebox - try that sans the tile above mantle - I would try that rendering with the "internal" frame a darker variant helping to ground HTH

Thanks for the suggestion, Davidro1. I think the Schluter edge is a little more contemporary and not sure it will match with my kitchen. Good to know there are other options though. Thank you, Babushka Cat, for putting it into perspective for me. Yes, I am so construction fatigued, I'm willing to put mismatched tiles on the wall! (After being so picky about everything else.) I haven't been able to find any vendors that have crackle tile in stock. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

vgkg - I’ve started some tomatoes by seed. So I’ll need to find a place for them somewhere. I was originally thinking in the planter where I have the cool weather veggies, but since those aren’t doing well I’m afraid the tomatoes won’t either. Daninthedirt- why is it hard to believe that that area gets that much sun? My house and my neighbors are 25’ apart and in-line with each other. They don’t have any landscaping or structures that would shade the area. There are no homes behind us, just woods that go down to a large river. I see you edited your response. Correct, I’m not talking about the area between the two homes, I’m talking about the small area when you first enter the backyard from that gate. In the photo I’m in the backyard facing the front yard. Rbrt - the arborvitae on the left of the photo are 4yrs old and around 8’. There are no arborvitae directly across from them. I staggered them and started the other row of screening on the fence line (right side in the photo).

I love your roman shades and the panels would be completely unnecessary. It would just add another layer of texture/softness/interest to that wall. If you did do something like that, extending the rod further toward the side walls would balance the windows by taking up some of the extra wallspace on the sides of the window. However, leaving just the shades would be just fine. I just feel you don't need anything else on the walls on the sides of the windows. I could see 2 matching poufs or benches (maybe caramel leather) under each window as a nice filler that would add seating or foot rests.

I would put a low console not too deep on either side of the frieplace with the T,V on an articulating arm on the wall above one console a piece of art above the other The sofa facing the fireplace and the 2 chairs side by side where you have the sofa now. I happen to think those chairs are perfect for that small space just move everything back a bit from the fireplace wall and a larger rug with some color would be nice.

We agree with placing the sofa facing the fireplace. You can put slim consoles on each side of the fireplace. You said the TV is on one side, so then you can add shelves on the other side.
