I wonder if the point was they had never heard of layering carpets for color and texture and pattern (done since rugs were invented), or just that they wanted a chance to sneer at the homeowners for the benefit of the viewers at home? This is why, IMHO, HGTV is near worthless for ideas: hours and hours of broadcast time wasted on young, tragically hip kids fresh out of school who, despite "designing" exactly like every other young, tragically hip kid fresh out of school, have somehow managed to get a *television show*, so they're convinced they're *special*. Pffffft. Rug over carpet is fine, your biggest problem will be keeping it in place, *not* whether or not it's going to look "right". If it's for the living room, I'd recommend getting one big enough to put the edges under the legs ofthe furniture, anchoring it down. Match the colors, keep it in proportion and it'll look great.

I think Kat may be right about the regions affecting color choices. As for me, I love burgandy but not red, and no pink (if I was single, yes, but wouldn't ask DH to put up with it). I've decorated with purple (a very grey purple)that was beautiful, and I love, love, love peach but don't have any in my home because I remember people making fun of the peachy 80's. I also love grey in other people's houses, and even thought of painting my MB in grey, but decided against it because I'm just not sure I could live with it. I'm trying a blue/green (mostly blue) in my family room right now, and think I'm going to have to color wash over it with a green - just too blue for the rest of my house. I love navy but tried it once in a room, and never could find the right shade for me. I also think some houses 'talk' to you about what colors to use in them.

If you need to keep it, then make it the star of the room. White walls, white trim. Take down the wood around the ceiling. White or light couch and chairs. Brass or dark wood accents, glass coffee table, furniture with legs so the carpet really takes centre stage. Art on walls with the hunter green in it, throw cushions in pattern/texture with hints of the green too. Make it look like it was a choice to install it, not a forced decision.

do you have pictures of the room? what color are the walls? how green are the doors? I'd stick w/whites and bring in some vibrant colors w/art like everdebz has posted. I wouldn't do pastels. I like more of whites with an accent like navy, or yellow, or coral, etc. No pastels. keep everything crisp, clean and bold. one option you can do is buy a remnant piece of carpet, almost as large as your room, and have it bound on the ends. use as an area rug. get it in a lighter, neutral shade. (or buy a very large rug to cover the green carpet. whichever is more cost effective)
